Today marks 5 years since the attack on our Capitol on January 6. There have been a lot of efforts to rewrite history, but I was there that day. The building that represents American democracy was attacked by a violent mob, incited by President Trump, with the goal of preventing the certification of the 2020 election. Five U.S. Capitol and DC Metropolitan police officers lost their lives as a result of January 6, by heart attack and by suicide. Today, I stopped by U.S. Capitol Police headquarters to thank them for their service five years ago. As I stood in their operations center, it was surreal and sobering: on the big screens behind them were TV stations replaying footage of the attack five years ago, side by side with a live coverage of a protest today on the National Mall, led by Proud Boys who had been found guilty of violence on January 6th, and pardoned this year by Trump. And on yet other screens, reports of how the White House was trying to claim that January 6th was "a hoax." Despite everything they face, the Capitol Police continue to protect lawmakers and our Capitol, including providing me with 24/7 security for the past month after a raft of new threats over the past few weeks. We owe the Capitol Police a debt of gratitude for what they sacrificed for democracy back in January 6, 2021, and for their loss of life. And we certainly owe it to them, on this anniversary, to tell the true story of what happened for the history books.

JUST IN: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for the individuals at the pro-Palestine protest at the Capitol to be "prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." She also asserted that the incident was an "insurrection" and is demanding that the Capitol Police hand over all "surveillance footage, photographic evidence, police reports, and arrest records" relating to the protests. "The Committee on House Administration must investigate this incident and review all footage and evidence provided by Capitol Police, and the insurrectionists involved must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." The Green Acres Mall on Long Island was flooded by teenagers on Thursday after social media posts called for a so-called "takeover." Police made at least nine arrests. The disturbing trend is now causing concerns for mall security and police departments across the Tri-State Area. Nassau County police rushed to the scene following reports of a large group of teenagers at the mall in Valley Stream. Of late, takeovers like this have been organized by young people through social media posts. Groups then disrupt businesses and create chaos. CBS News New York saw several young people, some wearing backpacks, being taken into custody. Mounted police combed the parking lot as the mall shut down. The Green Acres Mall incident was the second mall takeover this week, following one in the Bronx on Presidents Day. In total, 18 people were arrested in that incident. Also on Tuesday, social media rumors prompted a heightened Yonkers police presence at the Cross County Mall. The police are informing the public that the drivers of the two public passenger vehicles in the viral video driving recklessly have been arrested and the vehicles seized. Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, in charge of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, stated that the police are in the process of charging the men. He went on to commend the public for their continuous efforts in assisting the police and implore them to continue. #AForce4Good

Earlier today a man suspected of shoplifting in a Houston, TX mall was running from the police in a mall when he decided to jump over the 3rd floor railing and broke both of his legs upon impacting the ice rink below.... About 100 police officers were called to King of Prussia Mall early on Saturday morning for crowd control and dispersal connected to a watch release. Upper Merion Township police said a group of "several hundred people" gathered outside the mall before it opened for a new release from Swatch. When police told the group to move back from the mall doors, "the crowd continued to grow and and became more defiant."

Jesus Ayala, now 20, and Jzamir Keys, now 18, intentionally mowed down two bicyclists, killing 64-year-old Andreas Probst. On Monday 26 May, thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the Liverpool FC parade. What should have been a day of celebration for the city turned into a day of fear and anguish after Paul Doyle drove his car into a crowd, injuring more than 100 people. It is only by sheer luck that nobody was killed as a result of Doyle’s reckless actions. This video shows Doyle’s aggressive and dangerous driving before he reached Water Street, audio from his dashcam, and footage of his arrest. This has been one of the most extensive investigations in the history of the force. Over the past seven months, we have supported 134 victims, spoken to more than 1,500 witnesses, and gathered in excess of 700 statements. In the initial stages, more than 70 officers and staff were dedicated to this investigation, including colleagues from across Merseyside Police and neighbouring forces - Greater Manchester Police, Cumbria Police, Lancashire Police, Cheshire Police, and North Wales Police. We are extremely grateful for their support and collaboration. Today, Doyle has been sentenced to 21-and-a-half years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court, after pleading guilty to 31 offences on Wednesday 26 November. We know that a lot of people are still recovering from the injuries they suffered on that day and our thoughts remain with them and those that continue to be affected by the incident ❤️
