Today Google DeepMind released AlphaEvolve: a Gemini coding agent for algorithm discovery. It beat the famous Strassen algorithm for matrix multiplication set 56 years ago. Google has been killing it recently. We had early access to the paper and interviewed the researchers.

Google's AlphaEvolve system discovers and optimises algorithms by orchestrating Large Language Models (LLMs) within an evolutionary computation framework inspired MAP Elites from @jb_mouret and @jeffclune. LLMs propose code modifications which are then automatically evaluated, driving iterative improvement of candidate solutions. (Conceptual video made by us not Google)

LLMs function as sophisticated "genetic operators." They analyse programs sampled from the evolutionary database (which is structured to promote diversity via MAP Elites-inspired mechanisms) and generate targeted code changes, often as diffs, to produce new algorithmic variants for evaluation.
