Today Govt extended offshore processing of asylum seekers for 10yrs. They talk about the biz model of people smugglers, but there’s also a biz model of offshore processing. Compare the $420m we’re paying over 3yrs to imprison 65 people on Nauru w $4k pa to house in Aust. #auspol

The Govt gave parliament less than 24hrs notice and then restricted debate. I asked the Minister to be true to ALP’s election promise to process asylum seekers within 90 days & give an undertaking to that effect. Time for a royal commission into offshore detention.

Disgraceful decision by Labor. I’m so disappointed. So much for values-based leadership. @AlboMP @JEChalmers @ClareONeilMP @refugeenurses @Refugees @sandy_eagar

Consider the $80 billion we paid in just one year after the ALPs last border disaster. Consider the 17 detention centres we had filled to the brim.

Labor continuing to run scared from attacks by NewsCorp flunkies, so we keep paying $$$$millions to LNP donor companies to keep Nauru and Manus going.

Soooo disappointed in ALP behaving just like the Libs. Only difference is the projected establishment of Fed ICAC. How is that going, by the way? No progress on TPVs, David McBride, witness K, or Julian Assange. So much for human rights! Don't get me started on coal.

I have an even better money saving idea, send them all back & we the tax payer wont have to pay for them anymore. The money ca be put to good use & re-open clean coal fired power stations & get this nation moving again!

Unelected bureaucrat David Cameron explains how we need the Rwanda plan because of Brexit 🤦‍♂️ Anushka Asthana, "Hand on heart. If this had come up when you were PM, would you have gone with this Rwanda policy?" David Cameron, "We had a situation where you could return people directly to France.. People land on a beach in Kent, you take them straight back to France.. You therefore break the model of the people smugglers" Anushka Asthana, "Shouldn't you be trying to get that?" David Cameron, "That's not available at the moment" Anushka Asthana, "Because of Brexit?" David Cameron, "(Yes) Because of the situation we are in (having left the EU)" The UK has participated in the Dublin process since it was inaugurated in 1990. When the UK left the EU, the UK left the Dublin agreement and we no longer have the automatic right to return asylum seekers back to France. So Brexit was to take back control from unelected bureaucrats, and here we have David Cameron an unelected bureaucrat in charge of our foreign policy. And Brexit was about taking control of our borders and asylum seekers, and we've lost the ability to return asylum seekers to France, and instead have to spend over £1,000,000 to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, in a 1 in 1 out policy i.e. for every asylum seeker we send to Rwanda, they send us one of their asylum seekers, so we don't have fewer asylum seekers, we're just shuffling asylum seekers around. Hundreds of millions for a PR campaign to appease racists while there is a cost of living crisis in the UK and millions of Brits living in poverty. Disgraceful.

Zoe Gardener on asylum seekers, "People are being moved out of a hotel where there were violent racist protests taking place week in week outside of their gates" "People being terrorised who were living there, a huge disturbance to the local community" "Yes, its right people should not have been housed in that hotel but for it to happen in this way, what an enormous humiliation for this government" "A huge failure which lays bear the arrogance with which they have approached this asylum issue" "Labour have gone day after day after day this summer pursuing anti migrant rhetoric over their social media, their announcements, across all of their policy approaches" "Labour have fuelled the flames of this hatred" "What they should have been doing is acting sooner to moving people out of hotels and into a more sustainable community accommodation" "What if we allowed people to work while they are in the asylum system, as they do across Europe, so that they can pay to support themselves in private rental accommodation" "It is not illegal to enter the UK to seek asylum" "And in every other European country they are entitled to work while their claims are being assessed" "They are not breaking the law by being here, it is clear under international law they have a right to be here and claim asylum" "Under this privatised system of asylum accommodation where people own, as you say, poor quality hard to let properties. That's not the right model" "We should have a not for profit model of asylum accommodation where people are house through local authorities, where they are able to work in order to support their own accommodation" "It is insulting the intelligence of viewers that they can simply be made to disappear" "We're already seeing the violent far right racist organised parts of those demonstrations, those people are saying this was a success, saying that if they create a space that is unsafe outside these hotels, if they create disorder, they will have to move asylum seekers out" "And they are threatening to do it all over the country"
