Today I introduced legislation to require that the minimum wage be a living wage. $25 an hour is what’s required for a full time worker to pay their bills, and we shouldn’t accept that full time work leaves people living in poverty.

In the most affluent, most powerful nation in the world, everyone who works full time should be able to pay their bills. A minimum wage should be a living wage. And that’s $25 an hour. The billionaire class will say we can’t afford it. They are wrong. We can.

The federal minimum wage hasn’t been raised since the George W Bush Administration. The current federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour is a poverty wage and unacceptable. It’s time we raise it to $17 an hour.

Two years ago, I tried to raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. Not a SINGLE Republican supported that effort. Millions of Americans still work for starvation wages. We need to substantially raise the minimum wage. It's time for Republicans to join us in accomplishing that goal.

I co-introduced historic legislation to increase the minimum wage to $25. As someone who taught economics at Stanford, here is why it makes sense. The real minimum wage was $14 in 1968. Today it is half, but productivity has increased 2.5x. Instead of extractive capitalism, we need a free enterprise system that pays workers what they are worth.
