I am not about the Pride thing. I totally agree it has gone overboard in many ways. I do have to wonder, John, if you are aware of, and how you feel about, the reason pride was started. Here me out, please. Before June 28, 1970, our "Christian Nation," (and please, don't misunderstand I am a Christian) treated LGBT people worse than animals. So, it was illegal to be LGBT at one point. Arrests were common, and police weren't shy about rough handling, to the point of hospitalizing, gays and others. Often arrests meant having one's name printed in the local paper, which resulted in losses of job, losses of apartments. Homeless was very high among LGBT people. You could not be hired for a government job if you were LGBT. In some urban areas young men would pile into cars on Friday nights to go find gays to beat up. Violence against LGBT was seldom investigated. It was illegal to serve an LGBT person is bar. On June 28, 1969, a group of LGBT people gathered at a mob-owned, illegal bar on Christopher Street in New York City were subjected to an unscheduled raid. Normally, the informants paid off by the mob would alert the mob a raid was coming. A riot ensued and over a period of like 5 days a number of LGBT people and cops were hospitalized. Police were said to be going for the head with their sticks. One year later a group of LGBT people gathered in front of the Stonewall Inn, the bar the cops raided and marched to Central Park. This was the first step in changing the laws and ending the inhumane way LGBT people were treated. Pride was originally about standing up against the abuse. It is not longer about that, but originally I think it was a wake up call for a world all to content to treat people like absolute monsters. The rainbow was adopted to symbolize acceptance of all kinds of people. I think it is important to stand up to the nutso stuff going on, but also to temper that with how un-Christ-like it was to treat people in such a horrible manner in the first place. Thoughts?
