Was a great game. Quake 3 arena improved on this and was probably peak FPS gameplay

In 1994, Descent was released as shareware and formally released in March 1995. It was a true 360 degree game, coming out a whole year before Quake. While Quake has all the recognition, Descent was truly ground breaking.

He created music and sound effects for many classic PC games, especially those published by Apogee or developed by id Software: id Software titles: Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Doom, Doom II. Apogee/3D Realms titles: Duke Nukem II, Duke Nukem 3D, Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad. His Doom soundtrack is especially legendary. It blended heavy metal/hard rock influences (inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Alice in Chains) with the technical limits of early PC audio. Tracks like "E1M1 (At Doom's Gate)" became hugely influential and were even added to the U.S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2026. Play the video to listen to it once more. Then followed it up only a year later in 1993 with Doom, widely considered the father of all modern FPS games, due to its massive popularity, multiplayer deathmatch, and modding community - and defining the genre's mainstream popularity to this day. And if that wasn't enough, they gave us Quake in 1996. If there was ever a studio to not just create a genre but then to also dominate it for years and years, the vote would have to go to id Software, no? Sierra for adventures. MicroProse for simulations. id Software for FPS. Blizzard (or Westwood?) for RTS.
