Today marked the completion another phase in my personal and professional development, a pursuit born out of a deep desire to examine the root causes and complex dimensions of violence in Jamaica from a more scientific, psycho-social, and geopolitical perspective so we can design policies and implement strategies that...

Hello Abuja, Today, as we gather to commemorate International Youth Day—a day that acknowledges the crucial role young people play in shaping our world's future—I am honored to stand in solidarity with the youth of our nation, particularly those in the FCT, and from around the world. I also wish to reaffirm our dedication to empowering them for a sustainable future. We stand at a critical juncture in human history, where the decisions we make today will shape the future of our planet. Climate change, inequality, and social injustice threaten our very existence. Yet, I stand before you with hope, inspired by the passion, creativity, and determination of our young people. Youth empowerment is not only a moral imperative but also an economic and social necessity. Investing in our youth means investing in our future. We must provide them with access to quality education, skills training, and opportunities for participation in decision-making processes. As leaders, we must create an enabling environment that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. We must listen to their voices, value their perspectives, and support their initiatives. We must also address the systemic barriers that prevent many young people from reaching their full potential. To the young people of the FCT, I say this: we hear you, we see you, and we believe in you. We will work tirelessly to ensure you have the resources, support, and opportunities you need to thrive. Let us join forces to build a world that is just, equitable, and sustainable for all—a world where young people can grow, flourish, and lead. Happy International Youth Day! -Iretikingibe

Kennedy’s speech today concluded powerfully: “If we’re really going to end the chronic disease epidemic, we need to recognize the connection between the physical decrepitude that now badgers our citizenry and the pervasive spiritual malaise that has left so many young people feeling alienated, dispossessed, disconnected, purposeless, and hopeless. Spiritual and physical maladies thrive on one another; they feed on one another. Our overall wellness must begin with a spiritual question: how do we relate to ourselves, to each other, to our communities, and to the planet?” “Vested interests and malignant political actors profit and flourish when we are atomized and fragmented and uncertain, when we can be easily propagandized, when we live in fear and helplessness and victimization. These forces prefer to have us in terror and anxiety, which disable our capacity for critical thinking and make us more compliant and more credulous. They want us hiding from ourselves, to avoid our own shadows, and dulling our pain and loneliness through sedation and distraction. Yet inside of us, we know that love and self-knowledge are the only true paths to good health. Here at HHS, we need to take on the task of guiding our country and the world to question, towards skepticism, towards engagement, to discover our own paths to living our fullest lives, unleashing the potential in every one of us to make good personal choices that allow us to nourish, to heal, and to develop ourselves. Only this path will make us effective citizens in a democracy. This is decidedly the American identity that we want for our children and their children. Through our own example of dedication and integrity, we can inspire our country on the mission toward well-being and toward achieving our historic mission as an exemplary nation. The goals that I have for HHS—the goals of transparency, of informed choice, of integrity, of efficiency—are possible only with your help. This task before us is historic: to reverse a trend of worsening health that goes back 60 years. And I know that we can do it. I know a higher standard of health is possible. I know that because I remember a time that our country was the healthiest and most robust country on Earth. With your help and commitment, we can go back to that time. We can have that again. Now let’s get to work, and thank you all very much."

At this critical moment in history, as Ethiopia prepares for its historic and momentous National Dialogue, I have an important and solemn appeal to all my fellow Ethiopians. The beginning of tomorrow’s dialogue process is not merely an ordinary political forum. It is also the beginning of a new chapter in our history and one that will determine the destiny of both our generation and those to come, as well as our shared hopes for the future. To all of you who are committed to securing lasting peace, stability, and comprehensive prosperity for our country, and who care deeply about Ethiopia’s greatness: the opportunity is here, and the time is now. Just as our forefathers and foremothers fought at the Battle of Adwa with their blood and their lives for the freedom, sovereignty, and honor of our nation, today Ethiopia once again calls upon her sons and daughters who are ready to shoulder the responsibility entrusted to them by history. Yet in this moment, our country does not seek those who bear rifles. Rather, it seeks champions of peace and people equipped with maturity of thought, truth, knowledge, and steadfast determination. Today, as in the past, we stand on the eve of the beginning of a great victory, because the triumph of Ethiopia and her peoples is inevitable. Through civilized discourse, peaceful dialogue, and national consensus, we will overcome all the challenges before us and, together, advance toward prosperity.

I remember when i was still Catholic, we would walk 14 km to the parish to confess our sins to a priest. By then i was around 9-12 years.I cherish that discipline. Listening to this clip, the first question that came to my mind was; How did we get here? Where did we go wrong? Between 1994 and around 2020, the story seemed different. There was a generation of public servants who worked with a strong sense of duty, sacrifice and responsibility. Many served selflessly, often without expecting the government to solve every problem for them. Families built survival from zero, they raised orphans, and contributed beyond their means. Today, we are enjoying the results of that effort full-time electricity, water, internet, and tarmacked roads. So what changed? Why have we reached a point where we always expect the government to intervene? What happened to our communities? What happened to our homes and families? As we rightly focus on planning for and investing in young people, we also need to swallow a bitter truth: the responsibility of raising children cannot be outsourced to government, schools, or institutions. Our homes and families have a fundamental role in shaping character, discipline, integrity, and a sense of responsibility. What we are seeing in society is, to a large extent, a reflection of what is happening in our homes. We can continue designing policies, programmes, and interventions for young people, but unless we go back to the basics parenting, values, discipline, community responsibility, and personal accountability moral decay will continue. I am not trying to be a prophet of doom. I am simply looking at the signs around us and trying to forecast where we could be heading if we don’t address the fundamentals. Otherwise we need to be appreciative to government because it’s carrying out it’s moral responsibility.
