Today marks 12 years in the British Army. That’s right, I’ve officially spent over a decade being shouted at, saluting things, filling out forms, and wondering whether the meeting could have been an email. - I’ve gone all the way to Africa to learn that mosquitos are apex predators....

Today is exactly 10 years since my injury that ended my skate career, at the age of 24. The animation explains exactly what that night was like, and how stupid it was, but also how gnarly it was. I ended up rupturing an artery, tore ACL, LCL, PCL, MCL, and stretched out the nerve in the back of my knee that caused me to have a permanent paralyzed foot (drop foot). I can’t begin to tell you how devastating it was to have something I loved so much taken away from me in seconds. My whole life was dedicated to skateboarding and it all changed over night, because of just one stupid moment. I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs over the past 10 years, from hating skateboarding, wanting nothing to do with it, distancing myself from my skate friends - Then years later finding myself right back to loving skating and being apart of it again in different ways than just stepping on a skateboard. All of that has just been part of my healing process. I had a meeting with Rick, Carroll, and Smyth at Girl a few years back, requesting that we do a “Last Board”. They initially didn’t agree with me, but it was something that I really wanted to do. I felt just for the healing journey that I needed that chapter of my life to come to an end. I owe those dudes everything that I have in my life, Girl was my favorite company as a kid growing up, and I am so grateful that I was able to turn pro with them at 18 years old, and end my skate career with them (technically 10 years ago). I fucking LOVE Girl Skateboards forever. I also really like the idea of the board saying “GAME OVER” because it sounds so harsh, like “Dude, you broke your leg, you lose. You’re not Pro anymore. Game over” hahaha. I also just want to thank every single person that has supported me along the way of my skate career, from my family and friends, to every single person that we met at the demos and signings around the world. I am grateful for absolutely every second of it and all of it was a dream come true. And hopefully in 10 more years someone figures out how to cure some damn nerve damage. Shit. New part dropping 2034.

Novak Djokovic says for 99% of the players, reaching a Grand Slam final and a Grand Slam semifinal so far this year would be a very good result, but for him, it’s not enough “At this point in your career, does it still remain about winning titles? Or can you leave a tournament like this with some satisfaction of being able to still compete at that high level and reach a semi of a major?” Novak: “Last year I reached 4 semifinals. This year out of 3 Slams I reached 1 final and 1 semifinal. For 99% of players that would be a very good Grand Slam result, for me it’s not good enough. Because I’m blessed and cursed to be used to something of the highest degree in terms of results and achievements. In some way I’m also dealing with myself in a sense that I’m telling myself, look, this is amazing that you’re still able to play at such a high level and push the youngsters to the limit for Grand Slam titles. But at the same time, I always have the highest expectations for myself. It’s kind of that internal battle of what I’ve been through for 20+ years of my career, what the goals were, the expectations.. and trying to also balance it out and trying to be a bit more humble in that sense. I still enjoy the thrill of competition. Maybe I don’t enjoy all the hard weeks leading up to big tournaments, putting myself over and over again through a lot of pain, physically mostly. I’m glad that this tournament the body held pretty well. Pretty much every other tournament the last few years it was always something. I feel like when I’m healthy I’m still able to play as a top 5 player, still able to compete at the highest level. I like it. I like this life. Tennis has given me everything in my life and has allowed me an opportunity to become who I am. At the same time of course there’s always a question of how far do you wanna go, what you wanna play, how you wanna play, etc. I try to take it, in a sense, a day at a time and see how I feel. I don’t have any pressure or no one is forcing me to play. I do it because I really want to and because I still can play as a top 5 player. Let’s see what’s the future brings.” (via Wimbledon Press)

TVNZ journalist Anna Harcourt resigns after experiencing Long Covid Anna posted on Instagram: After nine years at TVNZ, and eight years at RE: News including six as Head of Content, I have resigned. I’ve been dealing with a bad Long Covid/ME CFS situation for the last few months and I’m just really sick of being sick so have decided to focus on myself and my health. My time at Re: has been incredible, from being one of the founding members in 2017, and then as Head of Content being able to help grow it into what it is today. It was incredibly important to me to help create a platform that delivered news, current affairs and documentary in a format, tone and place that young New Zealanders would resonate with, and I’m so proud of what we’ve done. Some highlights include: Winning best single-videographer feature video in 2019 for a story I shot, reported and edited. Best current affairs video in 2020 for an episode of a series I co-directed. Re: News winning best specialist publication two years in a row in 2023 and 2024. Being one of the hosts of the 2021 Vaxathon. Back to my health: don’t panic about me - I am slowly getting better. At its worst I was so dizzy I couldn’t stand up to shower and needed a little seat. I needed a stool in the kitchen because I was so exhausted I would get out of breath even chopping veges. I’ve gotten a lot better, but I’m still not 100%. I’m going to take my time to get better and then see what life has in store for me. Also I expect to get very bored so I will be cooking a lot. ______________________________________________ I remember back in May 2022, Newshub put out a couple of videos about how Long Covid was such problem, especially after Omicron (which I thought was odd, considering Omicron was meant to be the mildest of the variants, and was even often compared to a common cold). The two reports also happened to be about two young, previously healthy FULLY VAXXED people. I'll post those videos in the comments below. TVNZ+ Re: News Paddy Gower
