Today marks Emancipation Day, when the Slavery Abolition Act came into force across the British Empire Instead of compensating slaves, the government took out its biggest ever loan to pay the slavers: £300bn in today's money. We only finished paying off this loan in 2015.

The legacy of slavery and colonialism persists in the racism many of us continue to face. That’s why I was pleased to reform @APPG_AR this week to continue the campaign for action to address this through wholesale reparative justice. #EmancipationDay #Reparations

God bless those British Christian conservatives that fought to abolish the slave trade. The God bless those British men that sailed the seven seas and died stopping the evil trade around the world. Slavery was universal. In all societies since records began. We shouldn’t apologise, the world should be thanking us.

People in the comments not noticing the last sentence. “We only finished paying off this loan in 2015.” That means some of my income tax went towards reimbursing slave owners. This is not ancient history people!!

The decendants of slaves received nothing. However, successesive UK governments made them help pay off the slave debt through their taxes. Fast forward to today, & the Windrush generation are having to beg for their compensation brought about by Teresa Mays' hostile environment.

2015, it's shocking isn't it. Yet as Black Britons we're told it's in the past. Look at Trump today, 2024, questioning if Kamala's Jamaican 🇯🇲 background makes her Black. It's exhausting but we'll never give up.

A Leicester schoolteacher who never had a vote argued the world out of slavery. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 Wilberforce had spent forty years fighting the trade. By 1824, the slave trade was illegal across the British Empire, but the people enslaved before that date were still slaves. Elizabeth Heyrick saw a faster way. She wrote a pamphlet. "Immediate Not Gradual Abolition." She organised a sugar boycott across Leicester. Then across the Midlands. Then across Britain. Within nine years, the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act freed 800,000 people across the British Empire in a single Act. She didn't live to see it. She died in 1831, two years before the Act passed. Frederick Douglass said she had the head of a prophetess and the heart of an angel. Almost nobody in Britain has heard her name. We are here to put her back.
