39 years ago today, the Grateful Dead played Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA for the first time. It was the first of 39 shows there between 1987 and 1995. Here's Jerry's solo from the first set Stagger Lee. Props to the cameraman for staying zoomed in on his hands as he switches from fingerpicking to a pick and back again.

“The Grateful Dead has always been more than just music. It’s about the people who believed in it.” – Mickey Hart This year, we recognized the Grateful Dead’s Bobby Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann as our #PersonsoftheYear honorees for their amazing philanthropy and musical legacy. Mickey and Bobby accepted the honor along with family members of Jerry, Phil, and Bill, and spoke on the importance of community in music. It was a truly impactful night of music and raising funds for music professionals in need, including those affected by the fires in the Greater LA area. “My old pal Jerry used to say, ‘you get some, you give some back.’ And so we did.” – Bobby Weir

Let there be songs to fill the air 🌬️🎶 "One of the most-loved Grateful Dead songs, ‘Ripple’ was one of the many standouts on ‘American Beauty.’ It was played 11 times between 1970 & 1971, and then dropped until it returned in 1980, played as the set-closing song every night during the Dead's acoustic sets. It made one final appearance on 9/3/88 in Landover, MD, before being retired for good." - David Lemieux Watch the full performance of the tune from the final night of the Dead’s Radio City Music Hall run in October, 1980 on the Grateful Dead YouTube channel.

Heads as far as the eye can see 💀⚡ It was a scorchin’ July day in 1986 when the Dead and the Heads packed into RFK Stadium. Local news outlets were astonished to see the community that pulled through despite the hundred-degree weather. The Washington fire department came in to hose everyone down to keep the peace. Bob Dylan and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were openers for both nights of this run, standing strong against the tough conditions in leather get-ups. Footage from Cleveland Live Music on YouTube

This female singer created a video and sent it me from inside Iran, knowing she could be jailed or worse. Her “crimes”? Singing. Imagine risking your life for something as basic as music. On the third anniversary of #WomanLifeFreedom, Iranian women are asking men to join them in a simple but powerful act: don’t perform concerts until women are free to sing: No Women, No Stage. This is more than music, it’s about freedom, equality, and the right to create without fear. Dictators fear voices more than weapons. And when half a nation is silenced, the other half has a choice: stay silent or stand with them. Please join us.

“I had been working on this a long time before I gave it to the Grateful Dead, before I took off for New Mexico, which is where I originally sent them the lyrics from. I don’t know what to say about this song except that it was very important to me. It seemed to be saying oodles. It’s still one of my favorites. I didn’t know who the real St. Stephen was until after I wrote it. He turned out to be the first Christian monk or something.” - Robert Hunter Performed 289 times by the Grateful Dead, this Hunter/Garcia composition became a cornerstone of their repertoire. See the full 12/31/78 Winterland Arena performance on the Grateful Dead YouTube channel.
