In a session on the Middle East with regional partners. First, we need to ensure the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, without restrictions. Second, the events in the Strait have highlighted vulnerabilities that we need to adress. We should work together to alternative supply routes and new corridors, such as the IMEC. With better connectivity, we can transform vulnerabilities into opportunities. We also discussed Lebanon. Because a stable and peaceful Middle East requires a stable and peaceful Lebanon.

For the second time since the restoration of our independence, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has come to Ukraine. A government delegation also accompanied him. I thank His Majesty for his visit and for supporting our people. Sweden is among the five largest donors in terms of support for our Armed Forces and our citizens. This is very important for our defense and resilience. Support for Ukraine and possibilities for strengthening the Air Force of Ukraine, including with Gripen aircraft, were among the key topics of the talks. We also discussed continued humanitarian support and energy assistance. Particular attention was paid to defense cooperation. Ukraine is interested in a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership that will strengthen the defense capabilities of both Ukraine and Sweden. I informed the King about Ukraine’s security agreements with countries in the Middle East and the Gulf region, as well as European countries. We are ready to share our experience and technologies with Sweden and to expand cooperation in the defense industry.

The key is to strengthen Ukraine’s positions and relations with our closest partners, ensuring we create the necessary conditions and a fair atmosphere for honest diplomacy. I am grateful for the preparations for the Ukraine Recovery Conference, which will be held in Italy. It is important for us that Italian businesses are significantly represented in the reconstruction projects in Ukraine. I greatly appreciate our exchange of views today on the prospects for global developments and the immediate political outlook in partner countries. I would also like to extend my gratitude for the security assistance Italy has provided to Ukraine, particularly the air defense systems that are saving lives in our cities and villages. Today, Giorgia and I also discussed the preparation of a new security package. We deeply value Italy’s efforts at the G7 and EU levels to ensure international law remains effective and that our Europe stays strong. Now is the time when there is a real chance to end the war and stop Russia. To achieve this, we must continue increasing pressure on the Russian Federation, expand support for Ukraine, and finalize the security guarantees. We discussed the consequences of Russian strikes on Ukraine and the strengthening of our air defense and energy resilience – this is one of our key priorities at this stage. Today, I hosted the first meeting of a special panel on child safety online. For decades, we have made the real world safer for children and we must do the same in the digital world. The positive opportunities that technology offers cannot come at the cost of their safety, health or happiness. In Europe, tech platforms already have a responsibility to ensure the safety of users. But we must also do more to protect and empower our young people online. This is the aim of the special panel. We will work intensely with experts and stakeholders, including our youth, to forge a strong and realistic European approach to keep our children safe in the digital age. By the summer, the special panel will publish its recommendations for further action.

Today we discussed the threats and challenges we face right now, as we approach the fall, when Putin is preparing new attacks against Ukraine, additional mobilization in Russia, and a further expansion of the war. This is already the 21st package, and today Micheál assured me that he will work toward the 22nd. Now, during Ireland's Presidency of the EU, there are also decisions on the clusters for Ukraine. Two clusters have already been opened, and I am grateful for the readiness to keep supporting this work. It's very important that Ireland, as the country holding the Presidency, provides leadership, and that Ukraine can count on opening the remaining clusters. I thank Ireland and all our partners across Europe, in America, and around the world for their tangible support – and for a new support package from Ireland. It makes a difference. This collaboration has demonstrated what is possible when we work together to confront challenges that affect us all. A separate and important topic was Europe’s energy independence — Russian oil, just as Russian gas, has no future. Slovakia supports Ukraine on its path toward the European Union. This is highly significant. We also share the view that Ukraine and Moldova must continue moving together toward EU membership. Equally important is that bilateral cooperation on economic, energy, and infrastructure matters here, in our region, strengthens our peoples and our countries. Thank you for the meeting. San Francisco’s economy is recovering, and people want to be here again. As we continue to build that momentum, we need to make sure that San Franciscans feel the benefits and can continue to raise their kids in this incredible city. We need to build housing, we need to create jobs, and we need to keep bringing people back downtown, our front door to the world and the economic engine for our city. That’s why today I am proud to announce the BUILD Act with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood—a legislative package that will unlock stalled housing projects and create thousands of good union jobs. The BUILD Act will reform the transfer tax to incentivize investment in these housing projects and buildings downtown—stimulating new jobs for electricians, plumbers, and laborers. And we will put forward a ballot measure in November to ensure that transfer tax is paid on properties in foreclosure so we can offset revenue impacts. Our politicians used to take our workers and our families for granted. But those politicians are gone, and those days are over. We are now creating the conditions for our city’s success. By passing the BUILD Act, we will take the next step, creating the jobs and building the housing that San Franciscans deserve.
