Today, the EHRC Code takes effect, restricting which toilets trans people can use. As a proud ally, I backed EDM 240 calling it unworkable. This debate is still dominated by people who don’t understand the realities of trans people’s lives.

Chris Packham this isn’t a “trans debate.” Framing it like that already puts people’s existence up for discussion. It’s not a topic to argue over, it’s people’s lives. And Andrew Gold, calling trans people “deluded” isn’t concern, it’s harm. Those words have real impact on real people. If we’re going to talk about anything, it should be this: How do we support trans people? How do we listen better? How do we help people live safely and fully as themselves?

Yesterday, I questioned the Chair of the EHRC about the new Code of Practice, and the harm it poses to trans people and others who do not conform to gender stereotypes. The Code suggests employees of a business or a service should enforce restrictions based on evidence such as “the individual’s physique or physical appearance, behaviour or concerns raised by other service users.” When asked to specify what these would be, the Chair couldn't answer and instead spoke about “common sense”. The truth is that people would be relying on gender stereotypes, which are harmful not only for trans people but for others as well.

Yesterday, I questioned the Chair of the EHRC about the new Code of Practice, and the harm it poses to trans people and others who do not conform to gender stereotypes. 131 MPs have now signed my motion to stand up for trans people and stop the EHRC's Draft Code of Practice coming into force. For it to succeed, the motion needs to be debated and voted on, so I asked the government if it will allocate time. Unfortunately the Leader of the House did not make that commitment. We will continue to press for a debate and a vote. Please encourage your MP to sign EDM 240.

Good to see BBC Radio 4 Today covering the new EHRC statutory code on single-sex spaces - which comes into effect today - and giving its chair, Mary-Ann Stephenson, a decent amount of time to explain the legal position. But the introduction still slips into ideological framing, presenting the issue as ‘angry debate’ - women’s rights versus “trans rights”. Lambeth council deputy leader Natalie Kane’s contribution was pre-recorded, meaning her claims went unchallenged - particularly the suggestion that the guidance could discourage LGBTQIA people from accessing “life-saving” services, which seems unrelated to rules on single-sex toilets and changing rooms. She should also have been asked about the women whose privacy, dignity and safety these services exist to protect.
