I have always loved the story of how Chaka Khan’s version of “I Feel for You” came together. After she recorded her vocals, the legendary producer Arif Mardin worked overnight to turn the song into something Chaka was shocked by and had to be convinced to release. Not to mention the happy accident of his finger slipping and creating that now-iconic stuttering, repeated “Chaka Khan” vocal effect at the beginning. People don’t realize this today because we’re so used to it, but “I Feel for You” was revolutionary in 1984 because it collapsed the boundaries between R&B, funk, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music in a single record. Basically it was several generations of music smashed together in one song and instead of sounding messy it sounded fresh and exciting.
