I went back to listen to the testimony of the former KZN Hawks head, Leseja Senona, at the Madlanga Commission It is safe to say that he was mistreated by Adv Sesi Baloyi and Adv Hassim. They disallowed him to say anything that was likely to put Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in any bad light. They kept screaming at him Whenever he was about to say something that exposes Mkhwanazi's lies, he would be distracted to answer silly questions like these!? Mkhwanazi harassed and blackmailed Gen Senona before his testimony at Madlanga Commission. But none of the commissioners raised an issue with that. Commissioner Mkhwanazi is causing confusion here. He buried his mother a month ago, hence his appearance was postponed to today. He said he was the second born of seven kids of this lady. Now, Advocate Sello discovered that the mother he's talking about was 10 years older than him. He's 1975, this lady was born in 1965. He says she was the step mother who brought him up. He cannot explain things properly. 😭 It's going to be a long day! #MadlangaCommission

From this testimony, Commissioners are highlighting gaps from this IPID investigation. This is what Mkhwanazi worked with, the facts in front of him. Commissioner Baloyi's first "scolding" is based on Ms. Maphosho having claimed that the Dog Unit was prevented from searching the Scania yard and disturbed the possibility of a search of other containers that could have been there. And it's a natural thing. He looks great. But deep down inside, it's a decision for him because at the end of the day, let's say something were to happen again that isn't good, he's the one who's affected. And then his career is then not necessarily in his hands. Teams get to make a decision about keeping you and then things could go wrong. So, my advice for him is like when you are ready and you feel it, that's when you come back. But at the same point in time, you're not going to feel like your one thousand percent self until some point in the early, middle of the season. It's just something that takes time. He's done a great job with his rehab. And whatever decision he makes, everybody in here is going to stand behind him. And I think we're all excited to have him back."

Advocate Chaskalson asked Professor Fikeni, with a bit of a despondent chuckle, what can this Commission do, how can they frame recommendations in a way that they will get implemented, considering that recommendations from many other Commissions, including the PSC itself, are not being implemented. His response depressed me. 😭 He said first of all, there's no political will and administrative will to implement and follow up. No resourcing either for implementation. Most importantly though, it's when he says, those in Treasury for example who will say "what is the cost of doing this", they should be asked, "what is the cost of not doing it". In the security establishment, he says, the cost of doing nothing, is in the lives that are lost. The cost of doing nothing, it's not the statistics, it's the pain of every family going through the challenges that otherwise could have been avoided. He's basically warning the Commission that there is a high possibility that their recommendations will not be seen through. They'll bank on the fact that after 3 years we would have forgotten. And life will go back to what it was. #MadlangaCommission
