On a beautiful rainy morning, we set out on a boat to Ennore Creek, Chennai, where mangroves are thriving again where we have planted 1.6 lakh mangrove seedlings and 2 lakh associate species across 9 villages. We have also set up one of the largest Mangrove Nurseries where about 1 lakh mangrove saplings are ready for new plantation. We aim to restore biodiversity, and revive the coastal ecosystem in the creek. Here is some fabulous news on the International Day of Forests 2025. Tamil Nadu is on a Mission to create new Mangrove forests & restore degraded ones.Through strategic afforestation & ecosystem revival efforts, the state is reinforcing its natural coastal defense and fostering biodiversity through Green TN Mission. New Mangrove forests have been planted in 5,937.9 acres while restoration of degraded Mangroves forests has been done in 3,539 acres across 10 districts, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram,Thoothukudi and Chennai. The best news is this is being done with local community participation. This will give a massive biodiversity boost to local livelihood of fisherfolk, strengthen climate resilience as these forests act as natural shields against coastal erosion and will help in carbon sequestration being the best natural carbon sinks, tackling climate change. ⚠️ Winter Storm Fern Update: Our power system remains stable, and generating sites are performing well as Winter Storm Fern moves out of the region. Line crews are on the ground in Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee assessing transmission line damage and working to restore service. We are working closely with local power companies to restore service in affected areas and coordinate restoration efforts. While the storm is moving out, extreme cold is expected this week. Icy patches and black ice remain a concern overnight, with temperatures dropping into the single digits and wind chills near zero.
