Dr. Caleb Masterson say health insurance companies are openly breaking laws in Alabama He explains some of his patients situations with insurance companies - “I had an insurance company tell a patient that no authorization for the procedure was required, the procedure was performed, and then the patient was denied the care because the procedure was never authorized. So the patient got charged the entire cost of the procedure” - “I had another patient who is supposed to be due an answer to an insurance claim within 30 days of submission. If they do not reply within 30 days, that's breaking Alabama law. And that claim is currently at the 65th day, so its insurance can be breaking the law.” - “Then I had an insurance company deny care to a patient that they had previously approved. So a patient qualified for surgery based on medical necessity, they had met all the criteria for surgery, they underwent surgery, then the patient had that surgery denied. The patient submitted that information to the insurance company and said, Hey, look, this was already pre-approved. And they said, We reversed our decision and the patient had to pay.”

I recently received notification that an insurance company told the state of Texas that they couldn't find an ambulatory surgery center willing to be in network with them in Austin. They lied. My surgery center wants to be in network with them, and they know that.

This woman has surgery with anesthesia. UnitedHealthcare denied the anesthesia She appealed. UnitedHealthcare denied it again Her doctor said the anesthesia was absolutely necessary as she had to laser cells off her cervix UnitedHealthcare thinks ibuprofen would have worked apparently…. “I had surgery in May, for which I had to go under general anesthesia. Tell me why United has denied covering the anesthesiologist, $2,800. I filed an appeal in August. They just sent me a note that they denied the appeal. This procedure that I had is called a LEEP. It's essentially abnormal cells on your cervix that could become cancerous. They remove them. They laser them off of your cervix. If you're a woman, you probably understand having to even take Advil before going to your regular annual Pap smear. Imagine a laser on your cervix. In what world is Advil or, like, any sort of over-the-counter, like, pain medication supposed to work? The doctor strongly recommended general anesthesia. I would love for someone at United to tell me what they expected me to do for this surgery in terms of pain management.”

The patient doesn't want her surgery in a hospital. I know that she'll have a better experience and outcome at Redbud Surgery Center. They're calling the scheduling office of the hospital and questioning my plan and telling me what to do I can't explain how absurd this feels. I'm making a recommendation for my patient based on what I think is best for her.
