From Strategic Partnership to a Marriage of Convenience The Taliban’s Agriculture Minister is in New Delhi. The agenda is agriculture. The story is much bigger. In 2011, India signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Afghan Republic, the first such agreement Afghanistan concluded with any country. Signed under Congress and upheld by successive BJP governments, it symbolised India’s long-term commitment to Afghanistan’s democratic institutions, constitutional order and people. Then the Republic fell. By November 2023, the diplomats of the Afghan Republic were shamefully forced out of New Delhi, bringing the Republic’s diplomatic mission to an end. India’s long-standing strategic partner was pushed aside, while engagement with the Taliban steadily expanded. This is the same Taliban that attacked Indian diplomatic missions and personnel, including the Indian Embassy and consulates in Afghanistan. Today, its ministers are received with official courtesy in New Delhi. Every state pursues its national interests. But national interest should not silence legitimate questions. The world’s largest democracy, one that should speak about freedom, human rights, constitutionalism and political pluralism, is deepening engagement with a regime under which more than three million Afghan girls remain out of school, constitutional rule has been replaced by decrees, political pluralism has been dismantled, and Afghanistan’s education system has suffered a historic decline. Afghanistan also continues to host numerous terrorist organisations, including groups like JeM and LeT that has been targeting Jammu & Kashmir for years. The irony is difficult to ignore. A government that rightly calls for zero tolerance towards terrorism has entered a marriage of convenience with the Taliban, while abandoning the democratic partner with which it once claimed a strategic partnership. Perhaps this is one of South Asia’s greatest paradoxes: a Right wing Hindutva-led government presiding over the world’s largest democracy normalising relations with one of the region’s most hardline Islamist regimes. History will remember the interests that shaped these decisions. It will also remember the principles that were sacrificed along the way.

A good, productive meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. We continue to coordinate our positions. Yesterday, together with all our partners, and today in a bilateral format, we discussed expectations for the meeting in Alaska and possible prospects. We also discussed in considerable detail the security guarantees that can make peace truly durable if the United States succeeds in pressing Russia to stop the killings and engage in genuine, substantive diplomacy. It is important that, within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing, we should all be able to achieve effective formats for security cooperation. We also discussed the continuation of support programs for our army and our defense industry. Under any scenario, Ukraine will maintain its strength. Keir and I also talked about such mechanisms for weapons supplies as the PURL program, and I urged the UK to join. Of course, we also discussed our One Hundred Year Partnership Agreement. Ukraine is preparing to ratify it in August, and as a result, we will be able to hold an expanded Ukraine–UK meeting. A separate and important item on the agenda was investment in our drone production. We have significant potential to increase production volumes and urgently need financing for this. Drones play a decisive role on the frontline, and Ukraine’s capabilities to produce them are exceptional. Therefore, investment in such production can truly influence the situation at the strategic level. We are working with the UK and all our partners on this. Keir, thank you for your support!

One of the most interesting political fights in Portland right now isn’t happening between conservatives and progressives. It’s happening inside Portland’s own political left. Today, about 75 Democratic Socialists of America and public union members protested outside the Moda Center during a Portland Metro Chamber event featuring business leaders, elected officials, and new Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon. The protest was promoted and attended by city councilors Koyama Lane, Morillo & Green was simple: no public money for billionaires. But the issue is more complicated than a protest sign. Tom Dundon bought the Trail Blazers. He did not buy the Moda Center. The arena is owned by the City of Portland. And after more than 30 years, many of the building's major systems—from bathrooms and elevators to kitchens, technology, and other infrastructure—are due for significant upgrades. As a matter of fact, the facility is actually the worst in the NBA, a league where other cities have invested billions into their facilities and infrastructure over the last decade. As the protest raged outside, Dundon calmly told those on hand at the meeting that Portland poses a huge challenge due to its high tax rates, something he wouldn’t have to contend with in places such as Nashville or Austin. So, the question isn't simply whether taxpayers should subsidize a billionaire. It's whether Portland should invest in a city-owned asset to keep the Blazers in Portland. The financing is also more nuanced than many people realize. One proposal under discussion would use bonds backed by tax revenue generated by the team and arena activity, including income taxes tied to player salaries and related economic activity. Supporters argue that the arena helps generate the revenue used to repay those bonds while preserving jobs, tourism, and economic activity downtown. Critics argue that it's still public financing and that those public dollars should be directed toward other priorities instead. It's also worth noting who was inside the event. The protesters weren't just demonstrating against the Business Chamber or a billionaire team owner. They were protesting an event featuring liberals such as Senate President Rob Wagner, Senator Kate Lieber, Mayor Keith Wilson, and Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson. JVP is particularly interesting because she has often aligned with many priorities championed by the DSA and Portland's leftists. And based on the signs, this wasn't just about the Moda Center. Protesters raised concerns about workers' rights, corporate influence, PCEF funding, data centers, social housing, and more. Today’s protest is bigger than financing the Moda Center remodel. It's about two very different visions for Portland. One believes strategic public-private investment is necessary to rebuild and revitalize Portland and keep major civic assets viable. The other believes public resources should be directed first toward government-led programs and social priorities rather than partnerships with private businesses. My friends, today Barbados helped to launch something truly important for our country, for the Caribbean and for all climate vulnerable nations. Here in Vienna, together with the OPEC Fund and our CVF V20 family, we launched the Vulnerability to Viability Compact. That may sound technical, so let me bring it home. This Compact is about making sure countries like Barbados can access finance that is fairer, more affordable and better suited to the future we are trying to build. It means longer repayment terms, stronger partnerships and investment that follows the priorities of our people. Every Bajan knows what resilience looks like. It is the school that must remain safe through storms. It is the clinic that must keep serving families when pressure comes. It is the water system that must hold strong through drought, flooding and rising costs. These are not luxuries. These are the foundations of dignity. For too long, climate vulnerable countries have carried burdens we did not create, while trying to build modern, confident societies with financial tools that were never designed for our reality. Today, we are helping to change that. Barbados is showing that small size does not mean small ambition. We are standing with 74 climate vulnerable economies, representing 1.7 billion people, to say that our development must be planned by us, led by us and supported in ways that make sense. This is about hope, yes, but it is also about delivery. It is about giving our children stronger systems, safer communities and a country that can face the future with confidence. I am proud to say that Barbados came to the table with purpose. Barbados came with solutions. Today, Barbados helped move the world forward.

I always teach my children to be good citizens: don't litter, don't vandalize, and treat others with respect. This video is a powerful reminder that being a good citizen is not about what laws force us to do. It's about what we choose to do when nobody is watching. After a soccer match, these Japanese fans stayed behind to pick up trash. Not because they were paid. Not because someone ordered them to. They simply believed that public spaces should be left clean for the next person. Imagine if we all took that attitude into our communities. Imagine if we treated our parks, streets, schools, and neighborhoods as if they were our own homes. We would spend less time blaming others and more time setting a positive example. The values we teach our children matter. Good citizenship starts with small actions: picking up after ourselves, respecting public property, helping our neighbors, and leaving things better than we found them. A strong community is built not by government programs or slogans, but by millions of ordinary people doing the right thing every day. What do you think?
