93% in shadow is such a dramatic sweet spot for moon photos

🌕🌑 Look up tonight! A partial lunar eclipse is putting on a show. With up to 93% of the Moon slipping into Earth’s shadow, skywatchers across the Eastern U.S., Canada and South America get one of the best views. Africa, Europe and parts of North America can catch it too. Don’t let the clouds win. 👀✨

Up to 93% of the Moon slides into Earth’s shadow tonight. The copper tint is sunlight filtered through our atmosphere - every sunrise and sunset bent onto the lunar surface. A few hours of geometry. Then the alignment is gone.

What’s really interesting about this is 93% is almost a total. That leftover sliver is the only part still outside the dark inner shadow. It’s so cool that the Eastern US is not getting a different Moon. Everybody on the night side is looking at the same eclipse. Europe and the West just lose it to moonset before it gets that deep.

looking forward to catching the eclipse tonight — always feels a bit magical watching the moon go dark

the timing with the moon right at the edge of the umbra always makes the color gradient look way more dramatic than a full eclipse

Peak 12:13 a.m. ET. The leftover white sits on Mare Humboldtianum on the northeast limb.

I'll be out in the meadow tonight, away from the lights. Nothing quite like seeing that red glow with your own eyes.
