Topo optimization is a bit scary tho. The object gets extremely strong in the directions that you optimize for but can ve very very weak against out of scope forces.

there is no way this doesn't snap immediately at the first off nominal sheer force

At what point are material costs diminished by manufacturing complexity?

really cool, but this was a banger:

That is cool looking, but it has very little consideration for manufacturing and repairs.

Problem with those is you have to model all forces extremelly well or else... any off-nominal force wrecks you

This sort of "optimization" will kill drivers. It's optomized for the expected, not the unexpected. Many of those parts will snap and be as shrapnel in an accident.

Manufacturing costs be damned!

The technical team should have high knowledge of what they do. The load cases obtained from test tracks are not linear while in reality it is. So, making sure that you are optimizing correctly and accurately is a difficult. Always optimize if you are confident with lod cases.

Why does it feel like edge cases aren’t fully accounted for?

Only concern is how well it handles against variable, so the models account for all the various external and potential forces or simply what they assume it’ll handle

Will this approach make repairs easier and cheaper or are we just 3D printing disposable cars you have to throw out after a year or two?

Topology optimisation is an excellent design tool, but it is not a manufacturing revolution by itself in any manner. In automotive mass production, the biggest constraints are often cost, manufacturability, tooling, inspection, repairability, and production speed not just structural efficiency. That was never the area looking for optimisation The best designs are usually a balance between optimized geometry and the realities of high-volume manufacturing. Topology optimisation is not the next phase of mass manufacturing by any sense.

I can see a couple of Machinists throwing wrenches, hammers even lathes at this. "Saint-Nomad" one who can ragebait machinists. Plus I can already see that thing cant last more than 1 or 2 laps around a circuit.

$15,000 job to replace those rear struts, once the body’s on.

Spending so much time on generative design, was a mistake not to go all in and include the hard parts, like the steering wheel, the bucket seats for comfort plus crash injury prevention, oh yeah and the cab.

The question is what is it optimized for? That might be optimized for strength but it doesn't look like it's optimized for impact resistance... Or shock load.

Really is wonderful. So if you drive on a round track in the same direction, it suggests a vehicle that is no longer symmetrical? :)

Cool, go into production now. Topology optimization is great in theory, for prototypes and stuff built for the ultra-wealthy, but should only be a tool used by engineers who know how to actually make stuff at scale.

New manufacturing methods are the ticket to optimization. Metal 3D printing rocks.
