Andy Weir describing how he wrote The Martian and film got made is very entertaining. He said, “I wanted to make sure dorks like me would enjoy it, so made it as scientifically accurate as possible” Here the play-by-play: ▫️started writing full time in 1999 after getting fired from AOL (which had just merged with Netscape) ▫️he was a programmer and had a ton of stock options…because he was fired, had 6 months to excercise them and sold at AOL’s peak before bubble popped ▫️spent 3 years on book ideas that got “no traction” (and no agent wanted to sign him) ▫️went back to work as software engineer and wrote online as a hobby (webcomics, short stories, serials) ▫️The Martian was one of three serials he was working on 2009 (other one was about alien invading earth, another about a mermaid in 19th century New England) ▫️sent stories to a mailing list of 3,000 readers he had built up over a decade ▫️took 3 years to write The Martian, “posting a chapter at a time [every] 2 months” or so ▫️ “spent more time researching than writing, because researching was more fun than writing” (very relatable) ▫️readers corrected him along the way and when he was done, a bunch of them asked if he could make a Kindle version because reading it on his website sucked ▫️Weir didn’t want to charge because was making solid living as programmer…but Kindle has minimum of $0.99 ▫️all his fans started buying the Kindle book and leaving positive reviews ▫️this “sales spike” pushed book up charts and hit bestseller lists and just snowballed after that on Amazon ▫️within a short span, major book publisher reached out…then Matt Damon expressed interest on a film project…then Ridley Scott threw his hat in the ring ▫️Weir negotiated these deals while “debugging code” on his day job Described the process as “one of those things where everything just snuck up, bit by bit” before boooooooooom!! Film came out in 2015: made $630m on $105m budget (and Project Hail Mary might pass that now). *** Link to vid (2017):

Elden Ring: Nightreign | Gameplay Overview Releasing exactly two weeks from today. ▫️ The overall structure of the map will not change from run to run - this includes Sites of Grace, cave entrances, and major geographical features. ▫️ Points of interest, rewards, bosses, and mini-bosses will be randomized each run however. ▫️ World Events can take place at the start of your run. This will affect the map or your next run in some way. ▫️ One example is 'Shifting Earth: Crater' which transforms the northern part of the map into a giant volcano pit. ▫️ Enemies in these areas are more challenging but you should always try to explore them. ▫️ IGN: "Exploring the crater took us pretty much the entire second day, but when we did eventually make it all the way to the bottom, we beat a boss that granted us an Epic rarity reward by itself [...] but then also the Unique reward of upgrading any weapon in your arsenal to Max Level for free." ▫️ If you don't want to play with the assigned World Event, you can reset it by sleeping at the Roundtable Hold. ▫️ Random Events can also occur during your run occasionally - similar to the Margit invasion in the Network Test. ▫️ More random events - A giant tornado can appear on the map. Upon reaching it, you're invaded by a group of challenging NPCs. A mysterious boss can also appear that attacks from miles away, with each hit lowering your level. ▫️ Eight Nightfarers/classes at launch. Each one has unique weapons, abilities, and Ultimate Arts. ▫️ Up to 3-player co-op with matchmaking. If a teammate goes down, simply attack their body to get them up. Nightfarers with ranged weapons are particularly useful for this. ▫️ Sadly there will be no crossplay or cross-progression. ▫️ Releasing May 30th on PS5, Xbox, PC, and last gen for $40. #ELDENRING #ELDENRINGNIGHTREIN

The U2 x Las Vegas Sphere show took two years to create and will make ~$270m. In Fall 2021, the band was approached to open the $2.3B mega-structure (with a capacity of 18k). Willie Williams — U2’s creative director since the early 1980s — initially thought it was a “terrible idea”. Why? U2’s iconic tours have been breakthrough custom sets from Zoo TV in the early 1990s (pioneering giant screens on stage) to the 360 Tour of late 2000s (360-degree stage for stadium shows). They weren’t keen to build an act around the Sphere’s requirements, especially one with the most ambitious audio-visual specs ever: ▫️160k+ speakers ▫️366ft tall x 516ft wide (9 floors) ▫️Largest LED screen ever (160k sq ft) However, the idea of a residency — instead of a moving tour — appealed to U2 because of COVID travel uncertainty. One major obstacle was that dome-shaped buildings are typically awful for audio, per Variety. The Sphere solved the issue with its 167k speakers including one in each seat. Effectively, every person is “getting studio-quality sound” according to James Dolan (owner of NY Knicks, NY Rangers, MSG and the man behind the Sphere). Meanwhile, the visuals were a collaboration with the world’s top creatives (Es Devlin, Marco Brambilla, John Gerrard and long-time producer Brian Eno). The amount of data created to fill the LED screen is mind-boggling, per Wallpaper: ▫️ there are 268,435,456 pixels… ▫️ …which is equal to 72 HD TVs ▫️ … which is equal to 12k screen resolution ▫️ …which means “every minute of content produced for Sphere is the equivalent of one hour of streaming television” “With all the big stuff I’ve done for U2 and anyone else, we don’t start with the equipment, we start with the idea, and then figure out what we need to realize that idea,” Williams tells Variety. “And sometimes it involves big video, sometimes it doesn’t. Whereas here, the only given we had going in was the building — and a building that didn’t exist, and in fact isn’t finished now. So it was odd starting a show with hardware and with a space rather than the other way around.” Here’s some napkin math for “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere”: ▫️25 dates x 18,000 per show x $600 per ticket (range is $400 to $1400) = $270 million The entire U2 team — Williams, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg (who is subbing in for the injured Larry Mullen Jr) — clearly made a risky bet. But the viral clips and buzz from opening night show it has paid off big time.

The first step on Mars won’t be human. Elon Musk: “We will send the first Starships to Mars with the Optimus robot. It can go out there and explore and prepare the way for humans.” For 4 billion years, life had one rule. New territory required a new body. Fish grew legs for land. Primates grew hands for tools. Humans grew minds for abstraction. Every time life wanted to reach further, biology had to evolve first. Mars is the first time it didn’t. Never before has a species built a separate body to send ahead of itself. Not a rover with a camera. Not a probe collecting samples. A walking machine designed to reshape a world for the species that created it. Optimus lands 2027. Maps terrain. Tests atmosphere. Builds the first infrastructure human hands will ever touch on another planet. Humans arrive two years later. Not into the unknown. Into something already shaped for them. Already waiting. This isn’t engineering. It’s evolution, done deliberately. No species in Earth’s history has ever decoupled its reach from its body. We just did. Optimus walks Mars first so humans walk it safely after. But the real weight of this moment sits deeper than logistics. We just proved that a mind doesn’t have to travel inside the body that built it. It can design a vessel. Send it ahead. Follow when the path is clear. That’s not a Mars mission. That’s a permanent fork in the evolutionary tree. And it only grows outward. Centuries from now, they won’t fixate on the date a human first touched Martian soil. They’ll study the moment a species learned to send its mind ahead of its body. And discovered there was no such thing as too far.

Francis Ford Coppola’s new film “Megalopolis” cost $120m and he self-financed it (including money from selling his winery). Coppola is a legend of “going all in” and “putting skin in the game”. The GOAT example is “Apocalypse Now”, his classic 1979 war film with arguably the most insane production story ever. Let’s rewind to 1975, the year Copolla turned 36: he is on top of Hollywood after directing “The Godfather” (1972) and “The Godfather II” (1974). What does Coppola choose to do next? Make a film about the Vietnam War. The script was based on Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”, the 1889 novel about the horrors of colonialism in the Belgian Congo. The major studios all said “no” to Coppola’s pitch for three major reasons: 1️⃣ He wanted full creative control 2️⃣ He wanted to own all of the film rights 3️⃣ The Fall of Saigon happened in April 1975 and the American audience wasn’t exactly asking for a Vietnam War film (the studios wanted Coppola to make another Mafia flick) Coppola was undeterred and made a huge bet. “The Godfather II” cost $14m and the director estimated that “Apocalypse Now” would be the same budget. He put up $7m (mostly from those sweet Godfather checks) and raised another $7m from United Artists (which bought domestic distribution rights for ~7 years). But the project was a disaster from the start. Filming started in The Philippines in March 1976 and was supposed to last 3-4 months…it would take 16 months: ▫️Harvey Keitel was the initial lead but Coppola fired him after one week. ▫️Martin Sheen (Captain Willard) took the lead role but drank so much on set that he gave himself a stress-induced heart attack and almost died. ▫️Dennis Hopper was doing 3g of coke and 20+ drinks a day while on set (him and Marlon Brandon also hated each other). ▫️A typhoon destroyed 80% of the set and delayed filming for 2-3 months. ▫️Actual dead bodies — stolen from a local grave — were used on set and the Filipino government and its strongman leader Ferdinand Marcos threatened to shut down production after finding out. ▫️Marlon Brando (Col. Kurtz) demanded a huge fee ($3m+ for 3 weeks of work and 10% of the film’s gross). He then showed up late, asked for rewrites, declined to read Conrad’s book and was so overweight that the costumes wouldn’t fit (to obscure his heft, Copolla filmed Brando in the shadows and had him wear oversized dark clothing). The budget ballooned to over $30m. To maintain creative control and maintain all the film rights, Coppola mortgaged his home and borrowed money against his ownership in The Godfather. After the success of “Star Wars” (1977), Coppola even asked his friend and business partner George Lucas — who was originally tapped to direct Apocalypse — for some funds. I repeat: Coppola went ALL THE WAY IN and had SKIN IN THE GAME. His wife Eleanor took recorded video of all the insanity and the footage was turned into a 1991 documentary (“Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse”). The total cost for the film — including marketing spend — reached $45m. Against all odds, Coppola finished the project and the film was released in August 1979. It grossed $105m and Coppola would make a fortune on future DVD, Home Video and other ancillary revenue streams (below is a trailer for a re-mastered cut from 2019). During the Cannes Festival in May 1979, Coppola famously said of the film: “The way we made it was very much like the way the Americans were in Vietnam. We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little, we went insane.”

Before becoming Microsoft’s new CEO in 2014, Satya Nadella wrote a 10-page memo to the board as part of the selection process. He discussed the details of the memo on the BG2 podcast: ▫️Elevator pitch: Two phrases he used were “ambient intelligence” and “ubiquitous computing” (his PR folks told him to dumb it down and he remade the pitch to “mobile first, cloud first layer”, and has executed on exactly that over the past decade). ▫️Mental model of Microsoft = cloud infrastructure is core: “One of the things I've always resisted is thinking of our Cloud the way the market segments it…I don't allocate my capital thinking ‘here is the Azure capital, here is the M365 capital, here is gaming [capital]’ I kind of think, ‘hey, there's a cloud [infrastructure]. That's the core theory of the firm for me. On top of it, I have a set of workloads. One of those workloads happens to be Azure. The other one is M365 [then] Dynamics [then] gaming’…That was all in that memo and pretty much has played out.” ▫️Selling the cloud pivot: “We had a 98% / 99% gross margin business in our servers and clients [division]. People said, ‘oh, good news, you now can move to the cloud and maybe you'll have some margin. [But we already had margin].’[...] My gut was [that cloud first would be] less gross margin but the TAM is bigger…we'll sell more to small businesses. We will sell more in aggregate, in terms of even upsells like the consumption would increase.” Nadella -- who was running Microsoft's Server and Tools Business (which housed Azure) -- also noted that he was able to sell his vision because he was an “insider” (he joined Microsoft in 1992). As a result, his criticisms of the business would also be a criticism of himself. As Brad Gerstner and Bill Gurley note in the podcast, Nadella joined when Microsoft was worth $300B and has seen its market cap since grow 10x to $3.25T (one of the best public market CEO runs ever). *** Full podcast def worth a listen:

🇪🇺🪩 “90 Billion Later: How the EU Signed Its Own Death Warrant While Talking About Peace” By Brainless Partisans 🏴‍☠️☢️☣️🪆 “We all share a clear objective: a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.” — The Brussels motto engraved on a budgetary vault With the enthusiasm of a conductor convinced he has just found the perfect final note, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, recited her litany: just peace, clear objectives, urgent financing, and… resounding success. A kind of institutional mantra, hammered out through press releases and conferences, straight from a strategic marketing workshop. And what did we get? A €90 billion financing plan for Ukraine over two years, approved by a majority of Member States around a somewhat wobbly, pyramid-shaped agreement. --- 💸 1. Borrowing: the EU’s latest epic ballad Rather than directly using the €210 billion in frozen Russian assets as a source of funding, the chosen solution was a joint borrowing operation on capital markets—in other words, more European debt. Here is the logic: ▫️ Brussels says “peace,” ▫️ then borrows massively, ▫️ in order to lend to a country at war that is not yet a member of the Union, ▫️ hoping that someone, someday, will foot the bill. It’s a bit like a hotel offering rooms without a deposit, hoping the guest will pay after checkout… and after organizing a collective meditation session to “clarify objectives.” And make no mistake: when we say borrowing, it is European taxpayers who guarantee the bonds—meaning the debt will sooner or later end up in national budgets like a pebble in a shoe. --- 🧱 2. A financial Tower of Babel This €90 billion looks more like a financing tower than a peace strategy. At the very heart of the debate, four major fault lines: ▫️ The initial idea: use frozen Russian billions to finance the aid. ▫️ The Belgian obstacle: Brussels refuses to risk legal action or a loss of financial credibility should Moscow challenge the move in court. ▫️ The chosen alternative: borrowing on the markets with the blessing of a majority, but against the opposition of several states. The shaky compromise: Zelensky can repay if—and only if—Russia first pays war reparations, a condition that sounds like a promise made to a ghost. The outcome of this summit looks less like a strategic resolution than the assembly of a bridge whose pillars barely speak to one another. --- 🪦 3. Why this aid signs the EU’s death warrant (within 3 years) As the EU plunges deeper into ever more complex financial mechanisms, three realities—too often scrubbed from official statements—become glaringly obvious: 🔹 A. Unsustainable debt The EU is turning away from any strict budgetary discipline and committing to even more ambitious collective debt. The ultimate responsibility for repaying debt incurred for a non-member country implicitly falls on the Member States. This risks triggering fiscal tensions, austerity plans, and the rise of populist parties ready to shout: Why should our children pay for a war that isn’t ours? 🔹 B. A fractured Union Political consensus is eroding. Belgian mistrust, hesitation from certain countries, and opposition from eurosceptic governments reveal a stark reality: the EU is no longer a united bloc with a coherent common project. Every major decision now resembles a negotiation worthy of a banana republic, where no one truly agrees on the rules of the game. 🔹 C. Dependence on debt instead of reforms This financing solution does not address the geopolitical and economic roots of the problem. It neither resolves Europe’s energy dependence on Russia nor the fragility of its economic model. It merely prints money to “maintain peace,” while pushing the bill onto future generations. --- 📉 4. The final paradox: just peace, unjust debts Ursula von der Leyen sells us a future of lasting peace with a solemn smile and colorful charts. But behind the façade: ✔ debt is rising; ✔ disagreements are widening; ✔ European solidarity is eroding; ✔ and the Union’s already fragile economic engine is being overloaded. This €90 billion plan looks very much like a desperate gamble, hoping that something—reconciliation, war reparations, sudden peace—will magically appear on the horizon. At this pace, in three years, the European Union may look less like a beacon of international cooperation and more like a financial Tower of Babel, whose upper floors collapse under the weight of their own contradictions. 💭 And in this tragicomic play, the just and lasting peace may well turn into… infinite debt and lasting disunity.

Those Chinese micro-drama apps (ReelShorts, DramaBox, GoodShort) are hitting wild numbers. WSJ says 1 in 10 American adults watch them and estimated to hit $12b in 2027 (Hollywood did $9B box office in 2025). The apps do bite-sized English scripted video content…like Quibi but with a catch: instead of Hollywood hitters, it is cheesy D-grade soap operas meets Hallmark films. Shows about affairs, scandals, marital intrigue and absurd plots. Here are a few titles from ReelShorts: ▫️ “Son-in-Law’s Revenge” ▫️ “I’m Getting Married Without You” ▫️“Never Divorce a Secret Billionaire Heiress” I repeat: NEVER DIVORCE A SECRET BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS (sound advice, tbh). During the pandemic, micro-series took off in China with blue-collar demographics as a substitute for movie theatres. A micro-drama show is typically shot in 60 to 90 “episodes”with each lasting 90 to 120 seconds. Total assembly line stuff….the entire series costs $300,000 and can be made in a week (the comparison WSJ makes: Squid Game is 9 hours total and took 7 months and $21m to make). ReelShort adapted a lot of these Chinese romance dramas for Western audiences. It is free to watch but you view ads to unlock more episodes. Or pay for “coins” to unlock them (60-90 episodes costs in the ~$20 range). ReelShort — like other popular Chinese apps before (Temu, Shein, TikTok) — has spent a ton on Facebook ads to drive downloads. The app is owned by Beijing-based COL Group, which had to expand its audience because many shows are banned in China. Per The Economist, “1.4m micro-series episodes” and “2,420 mini-shows” across various creators were shut down because the Chinese government “deemed to be explicit or vulgar.” Recall, Quibi was short for Quick Bites. Something to watch during 5-minute dead zones (waiting in lines, during breaks, commuting stuff). These Chinese apps took the concept and ran with it. ReelShort made 400 “shows” last year and is aiming for 600 in 2026. They want to approach Netflix…which has its own vertical style TikTok feed on mobile. There are US-based versions too (GammaTime, Verza Tv, PineDrama…which is from TikTok). Below are the first two episodes of a show called “The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband”, which ReelShort CEO Joey Jia says was so popular it saved the app. I watched them and now you have to also (if you already haven’t). *** The Economist: WSJ from last month:

🚨 SCIENTISTS BROUGHT “DEAD” ANIMALS BACK TO LIFE USING SYNTHETIC BLOOD — AND PEOPLE THINK THEY MAY HAVE JUST CRACKED DEATH A Yale experiment is going viral after scientists revealed they were able to restore activity inside pigs that had been clinically dead for over an hour. No heartbeat. No circulation. No oxygen. The pigs were intentionally placed into cardiac arrest and left dead for a full 60 minutes before researchers connected them to an experimental system called OrganEx, a machine that pumps a synthetic blood-like fluid throughout the body. What happened next has people genuinely disturbed: • hearts began showing electrical activity again • circulation returned throughout the body • organs started functioning • skin color came back • and some of the pigs reportedly made sudden movements during procedures Researchers insist the animals were NOT conscious. But the experiment is now reigniting massive debate online over: • whether death is actually permanent • how long cells remain “alive” after the body shuts down • and whether modern science is getting dangerously close to reversing death itself Now the internet is completely split: • “This sounds like the beginning of a dystopian movie.” • “So what exactly counts as dead now?” • “Science is entering territory humans were never supposed to touch.” • “Imagine what they’re already testing behind closed doors.” If scientists eventually figure out how to reverse death… should humans even be allowed to use it? 📹: popularmechanics

Whitney Webb breaks down the coordinated global push for a new, dystopian system of control, marrying digital ID with CBDCs. This isn't conspiracy; it's all in their own documentation. They are building a full-spectrum digital cage, and its two locked doors are Digital Identity and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). You cannot have one without the other. The plan is to replace your government-issued ID with a Digital ID, but it's not just a card in your phone. It is fundamentally built upon your immutable biometrics: your fingerprints, the precise structure of your face, the unique pattern of your iris. This biometric data is the key. It is the hard link that ties your physical body directly to your digital identity credential. Your very body becomes your password. The reason this is so critical for them is the financial system. UN & Bank for International Settlements docs overtly state that Digital ID and CBDCs are designed to be integrated. The system cannot exist without this biometric digital ID. Why? Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols. For this new digital financial system to function, they must absolutely "know" every single participant. Your digital wallet will be tied to your digital ID, which is mapped to your biometrics. Total financial-biological linkage. We see the prototypes being rolled out now: • Sam Altman's WorldCoin lures people to scan their irises for a "unique identifier" and a digital wallet. This is the exact model. • The UN's "Building Blocks" program forces refugees to scan their iris at checkout to receive food rations. The value is deducted from a wallet tied to that biometric ID. They justify this total surveillance under the guise of closing the "identity gap," claiming the world's poor need digital IDs to access essential services like banking and healthcare. The reality? This is the ultimate onboarding mechanism into a system of programmable control, where your access to society and your own money is permissioned and revocable based on your compliance. This is the bedrock of the new global financial system. It is not about convenience. It is about control. Your body is the new currency, and they are forcing you to hand over the keys.
