For the last several months, I've been working on a 38 minute documentary, "Killing America: Can America's Schools be Saved?" I'm proud to release the trailer today and it is below. What happened in southern Israel on October 7th shook the world in many ways. Most of us never imagined that the ripple effects would reach our public high schools in America, but they did and what they revealed was a shockingly strong current of antisemitism among teachers, students, and staff. This comes after years of anti-white and anti-Asian hate. Where was this tribal hatred coming from, especially after 60 years of diversity efforts that promised us unity? That is why I decided to do a deep dive investigation in the Bay Area schools and Killing America is the result. GeoLibre v2.7.0 is here! GeoLibre is a free and open-source, lightweight, cloud-native GIS platform for visualizing, exploring, and analyzing geospatial data. It runs everywhere you do, in the web browser, on the desktop, on mobile, and inside Jupyter notebooks, all while keeping your data local and private. This release is about building analysis instead of typing it: a visual Model Builder for processing workflows, a STAC browser that can add every asset type the app can draw, and a Chrome extension that opens the data on any web page in one click. 97 pull requests merged in 9 days, from 11 contributors besides me, 9 of whom sent their first contribution to GeoLibre in this cycle. What's new in v2.7.0 - Model Builder, a visual canvas for processing: drop tools as nodes, wire one tool's output into the next tool's input, and save the graph as a model that re-runs as a single job. The whole graph is validated before anything executes. - Your AI assistant can build one for you: describe a workflow in plain English, and it authors a validated model and opens it for review before it runs. Any model copies out as a runnable Python script. - Open data in GeoLibre, a Chrome extension now on the Chrome Web Store: it finds the dataset links and map services on the page you are viewing, including services inside embedded maps, and opens the ones you pick together on one map. - The STAC browser adds everything: PMTiles, GeoParquet, and Zarr with a variable picker join the COGs it already loaded, Icechunk repositories are read through their own manifest, and private Planetary Computer assets are signed for you. A static catalog can now be walked as a tree, not only searched. - Select features by drawing on the map: click, rectangle, polygon, freehand, and radius gestures, with Shift and Alt combining into the selection you already have. No more describing features in an expression to pick a handful of them. - Apache Iceberg tables load as vector layers, read in the browser through DuckDB, from a metadata location or a REST catalog, with the row count reported before anything is scanned. - Encoded polylines are a first-class format, with a codec, an interactive preview, processing tools, layer export, and Python support. - New vector tools: merge layers, extract vertices, and generate points along lines and polygon boundaries, all running client-side. - An activity log for shared projects and collaboration sessions, so a project owner can see who opened and edited their work. - Plugins and processing tools are now translatable too, closing the last gap where a non-English interface still read half in English. Ace is coming home!!! Our K9 hero Ace was shot & critically injured protecting deputies and our community on Thursday night……it’s Sunday now, and he’s coming home. The bad guy who shot Ace was eliminated by his handler and two other deputies at the scene. Ace’s life was saved through the incredible work of a whole lot of people: his loyal partner, Deputy Natalie Oestreich, who quickly attended to his wounds & carried him to safety; the amazing staff and Dr. Aguayo at Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Lakeland who stopped his bleeding & stabilized him; the outstanding Tampa General Hospital @ Aeromed crew who got him quickly & safely to the amazing Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch, where Dr. Diaz performed the several-hour-long surgery to amputate Ace’s left front leg. Upon waking from the anesthesia, Ace attempted to walk out of there. He has not been deterred since. In fact he outran the camera attempting to film his release this afternoon! EMS was delayed because DC911/Office of Unified Communications sent DC Fire and EMS Department to two bad locations in the wrong quadrant of the city. While this was going on, US Park Police told DC911 that the patient’s “condition was deteriorating”. Listen to the radio traffic below 🔽🔽. US Park Police were at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW near the Lockkeeper’s House in the shadow of the Washington Monument, just south of the White House. OUC only learned of the mistake after US Park Police called on the radio, wondering where the medics were. About the same time, a fire officer who was sent to the wrong location noticed in the notes entered by DC911 that the correct location was by the Lockkeeper's House, a landmark provided to 911 by US Park Police. It should have been a big clue to call-takers and dispatchers that they entered the wrong quadrant. By the time OUC dispatched the correct fire and EMS units to the correct location, a US Park Police officer decided to drive the patient to the hospital.
