Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Jain says, "This morning at 5.15 AM, a fire incident was reported in Train No. 12431, the Rajdhani Express travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Nizamuddin, specifically in the rear SLR and B1 coach of the Kota division. Upon noticing the fire, railway staff promptly evacuated all passengers, separated the affected coach from the rest of the train, and informed the fire brigade, state administration, and railway authorities. Due to the dense powder released from the fire extinguishers, visibility was severely reduced, creating a fog-like effect. While in Djibouti, I stopped at Ali Sabieh station, a minor station along the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway that serves as a flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative and links landlocked Ethiopia with coastal Djibouti. It is Africa's first electrified trans-boundary railway. (Video 1, Picture 2) Manager of the Ali Sabieh passenger station, 32-year-old Souleiman Youssouf Ahmed, told me that the railway has greatly improved the safety and convenience of travel between Djibouti and Ethiopia. (Picture 3) According to Souleiman, Djiboutians flock to the Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa throughout the summer to escape the stifling heat. Minibuses were the only option from Dire Dawa to Ali Sabieh before the railway construction. While only designed to hold ten people, the minibus was frequently crammed with twenty. The minibus shared the road with the freight trucks; accidents were common. "The train cuts travel time by two hours while also providing passengers with the added bonuses of comfort and security. At its peak in the summer, the train has carried as many as 950 passengers in a single day," said Souleiman. Fatouma Houssein Daher, a Djiboutian girl who frequently takes the train to Ethiopia, expressed her appreciation for the railway, saying that it represents the friendship between China and Africa. PL Mehta was 10 years old at the time of Partition in 1947. He along with his family of 14 members fled from Pind Dadan Khan in Western Punjab to India. Three refugee trains were to carry the refugees to India. The first train was packed with Sikhs. Since Sikhs were the main targets of Muslim mobs, Mehta's father decided not to travel by that train. They couldn't get on the second train but took the third one. When the train reached Kamoke station near Lahore it was packed with over 3,500 Hindu refugees. A Muslim mob attacked the train and killed almost all of them, including 11 of Mehta's family. When the mob climbed onto their wagon, the boy's uncle asked him to lie down on the floor and covered him with his turban. Seconds later the uncle's neck was slashed with a sword. The sword narrowly missed the young Mehta who got drenched in his uncle's blood. The only ones to escape death were young boys like Mehta or those who were injured. After the mob left, there was still no respite for Mehta because the Baloch soldiers on the platform would shooting anyone who attempted to step out of the train. Mehta and the few remaining survivors had a stroke of luck when a convoy of Hindu soldiers arrived at the station and escorted them to the hospital in Gujranwala. However, at the hospital the Muslim doctors started murdering the injured Hindus by injecting them with chemicals. The Hindu non-medical staff at the hospital told the refugees not to allow the doctor to give them injections. Mehta and the other survivors were taken to Delhi. When the train with 3,500 dead Hindus reached the capital, the people at the station saw the message written by the Pakistanis on the wagons: "Tohfa (Gift) for Hindustan and Gandhi and Nehru." Both Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru reached the railway station and when they saw the gruesome sight, all they said was, "No, this can't be true." There was not even enough space to walk to the washroom. People were sleeping on the floor, near the doors, and everywhere possible. The TC came and saw everything, but did not say a single word. It looks like this has become normal for Indian Railways. I have sympathy for these passengers, but if Railways already know that general coach passengers are more, then why not add more general coaches? Why are sleeper coaches being turned into general coaches every day? For years, passengers have been raising the same issue, posting photos and videos, tagging officials, and still nothing changes. Indian Railways talks about modernization and new trains, but what about basic crowd management and passenger safety in normal trains? And please, do not ask me for the PNR. Asking for the PNR will not solve this issue. This is not one passenger’s problem. This is the daily reality of thousands of people.

A 22-year-old passenger was allegedly stabbed to death inside a first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train following an argument over keeping the coach door open during heavy rain, police said. The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling in the first-class coach of Train No. 90663, when the incident occurred between Andheri and Borivali stations. Lohar worked as a salesman for a private company in Andheri and was returning home from work at the time of the incident. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Lohar and the accused were travelling in the same first-class compartment after the train departed Churchgate at 10:05 p.m. As heavy rain lashed the city, Lohar reportedly asked the accused to close the coach door. The request allegedly led to a heated argument between the two passengers. During the altercation, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, inflicting serious injuries. The train reached Borivali Station's Platform No. 6 at 11:04 p.m. Police said the accused jumped from the moving train near the platform before it came to a complete halt and fled from the station premises. Western Railway said its emergency response system was activated immediately after information about the incident was received. Within three minutes of the train's arrival, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP reached the coach and attended to the injured passenger. A stretcher, porter and medical team were rushed to the compartment. Lohar was evacuated from the coach and taken to the Emergency Medical Room at Borivali station at 11:22 p.m., where he was examined by a doctor. On medical advice, he was shifted by ambulance to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, accompanied by GRP and RPF personnel. However, he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Borivali GRP has registered a murder case and launched a manhunt for the accused. Police said multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the suspect. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from railway stations and gathering information from passengers who may have witnessed the attack. The matter remains under investigation.

We had to get up early because Big Boy's schedule had changed, so we headed out of the mountains into the Great Central Valley outside Lincoln, CA. It was a cold, rainy day, which made for some dramatic scenes. We parked by an "at-grade" crossing where trains usually blow their horns. We were not disappointed! Why was it going so slowly? That paid off big time for us as another train was coming, and Big Boy had been put on a siding track while a freight train passed. That allows us some time to get up close and personal with the massive engine.

Bringing Ireland's Past to Life 🇮🇪🚂🚃 My colorised circa 1920s Pathé footage showcases the Lartigue monorail. This monorail was the only one in the world to successfully operate on a commercial basis. Charles Lartigue, a Frenchman, designed this steam-powered monorail that ran from 1888 to 1924, covering a distance of 9 miles between Listowel and Ballybunion in County Kerry. It carried passengers, livestock and freight along a rail supported on A-shaped trestles. The last train ran on the 14th October 1924 and everything was scrapped. Much of the track was sold off to local farmers for use as fencing, except a short section of the track. For those interested, Listowel now offers a demonstration journey on a full-scale diesel-powered replica of the original monorail and also has a Lartigue Museum. On March 5, 2022 when the train was heading for people from Kyiv to Irpin, russians fired at it. The track was destroyed by a missile and wagons were broken into pieces. Two wagons derailed. Fortunately, there were no passengers in it, no one from the team was injured. Since then, evacuation from Irpin became impossible. The railway bridge across the Irpin River was blown up. By that time, the train had rescued about 10,000 lives. I visited this piece of bravery today 💔 It is on display on Mykhailivska Square. P.S. Irpin was liberated on March 28, 2022.
