A dispute over closing the door of a Mumbai local train during heavy rain turned deadly late Monday night when a 22-year-old passenger was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow commuter inside a first-class coach, police said. The incident took place aboard the Churchgate-Nallasopara Fast Local between Andheri and Borivali stations. The victim, identified as Mayank Ramesh Lohar, and the accused had boarded the first-class coach at Andheri and were travelling in the same compartment when a dispute reportedly broke out over whether the train door should be kept open or shut amid the downpour. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the argument soon turned violent, with the accused allegedly pulling out a knife and stabbing Lohar in the abdomen inside the moving train. The attack left the 22-year-old critically injured. As the train approached Borivali station around 11 pm, the accused allegedly jumped off before it came to a complete halt at Platform No. 6 and fled the scene. The train arrived at Borivali station at 11.04 pm, following which Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, GRP officials and medical teams rushed to the coach. Lohar was taken out of the compartment and shifted for emergency treatment. Doctors examined him at the station's Emergency Medical Room at around 11.22 pm and declared him dead. His body was later shifted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali for further legal procedures. Borivali GRP has registered a case and launched a search operation to trace the accused, whose identity is yet to be established. Officials said CCTV footage and other evidence from the station and train were secured immediately and handed over to investigating agencies. Senior Western Railway officials also reached Borivali station after the incident and reviewed the response and security arrangements. Previously, this train operated from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). When LTT was converted into an LHB-based coaching depot, the service was shifted to Dadar. To accommodate this at Dadar, the number of coaches had to be reduced from 22 to 17... There have been no other changes to its operation, frequency, or stoppages; the only difference is that the train, which previously ran 'on demand,' has now been made a regular service. Additionally, it was shared that last week, 14 trains were regularised, 7 of which serve various cities in Maharashtra. Over the last 3–4 years, no trains have been cancelled in this region. The 10 coach train has 2 Hydrogen Driving Power Cars and 8 trailer coaches, carrying around 2,600 passengers. Each power car produces 1,200 kW, giving a combined output of 2,400 kW (3,200 hp). The train is designed for 110 km/h but will initially operate at 75 km/h. India has also commissioned the country’s largest railway hydrogen refuelling facility at Jind, with 3,000 kg hydrogen storage and on-site green hydrogen production. The train features advanced safety systems, including hydrogen leak detection, automatic shut-off mechanisms, continuous ventilation, and certification to NFPA-2, ISO 19880, and TUV SUD standards. Indian Railways plans to expand hydrogen train operations, including on heritage routes such as Kalka-Shimla, supporting the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s Net Zero goals.

In the spring of 2022, when russian troops were approaching Kyiv and cutting off all the evacuation routes, the only way to escape from Irpin and surrounding settlements was the railway. On March 5, 2022 when the train was heading for people from Kyiv to Irpin, russians fired at it. The track was destroyed by a missile and wagons were broken into pieces. Two wagons derailed. Fortunately, there were no passengers in it, no one from the team was injured. Since then, evacuation from Irpin became impossible. The railway bridge across the Irpin River was blown up. By that time, the train had rescued about 10,000 lives. I visited this piece of bravery today 💔 It is on display on Mykhailivska Square. P.S. Irpin was liberated on March 28, 2022.

While in Djibouti, I stopped at Ali Sabieh station, a minor station along the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway that serves as a flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative and links landlocked Ethiopia with coastal Djibouti. It is Africa's first electrified trans-boundary railway. (Video 1, Picture 2) Manager of the Ali Sabieh passenger station, 32-year-old Souleiman Youssouf Ahmed, told me that the railway has greatly improved the safety and convenience of travel between Djibouti and Ethiopia. (Picture 3) According to Souleiman, Djiboutians flock to the Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa throughout the summer to escape the stifling heat. Minibuses were the only option from Dire Dawa to Ali Sabieh before the railway construction. While only designed to hold ten people, the minibus was frequently crammed with twenty. The minibus shared the road with the freight trucks; accidents were common. "The train cuts travel time by two hours while also providing passengers with the added bonuses of comfort and security. At its peak in the summer, the train has carried as many as 950 passengers in a single day," said Souleiman. Fatouma Houssein Daher, a Djiboutian girl who frequently takes the train to Ethiopia, expressed her appreciation for the railway, saying that it represents the friendship between China and Africa. "Taking the train to Ethiopia is a low-cost and comfortable option. It's lovely that the Chinese have helped us create our railway," she said. She added that she didn't understand why Western nations consistently disparage the railway that has made life easier for Djiboutians. Since it was put into operation in January 2018, the railway has seen 1,824 passenger trains pass through carrying nearly 530,900 people and 6,133 cargo trains with about 7,328,500 tonnes of goods. A 22-year-old passenger was allegedly stabbed to death inside a first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train following an argument over keeping the coach door open during heavy rain, police said. The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling in the first-class coach of Train No. 90663, when the incident occurred between Andheri and Borivali stations. Lohar worked as a salesman for a private company in Andheri and was returning home from work at the time of the incident. According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Lohar and the accused were travelling in the same first-class compartment after the train departed Churchgate at 10:05 p.m. As heavy rain lashed the city, Lohar reportedly asked the accused to close the coach door. The request allegedly led to a heated argument between the two passengers. During the altercation, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, inflicting serious injuries. The train reached Borivali Station's Platform No. 6 at 11:04 p.m. Police said the accused jumped from the moving train near the platform before it came to a complete halt and fled from the station premises. Western Railway said its emergency response system was activated immediately after information about the incident was received. Within three minutes of the train's arrival, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP reached the coach and attended to the injured passenger. A stretcher, porter and medical team were rushed to the compartment. Lohar was evacuated from the coach and taken to the Emergency Medical Room at Borivali station at 11:22 p.m., where he was examined by a doctor. On medical advice, he was shifted by ambulance to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, accompanied by GRP and RPF personnel. However, he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Borivali GRP has registered a murder case and launched a manhunt for the accused. Police said multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the suspect. In 1869, Queen Victoria commissioned two railway coaches, which were built at Wolverton Works by the London & North Western Railway and designed by Richard Bore. This elaborate saloon was reputedly Queen Victoria’s favourite railway vehicle, having been built jointly at her and the LNWR’s expense, and was not replaced until after her death. Most of her long-distance journeys were over the London & North Western and Caledonian Railways, and the West Coast Route consequently developed an interest in the operation of the Royal Train. This vehicle started life as two separate six-wheel vehicles connected by a flexible gangway, the first to be fitted to coaches in this country. Eventually the two bodies were remounted on a new, twelve-wheel bogie underframe, which gave better riding and overcame the Queen’s dislike of having to pass from one vehicle to the other while it was in motion. Roshan Suvarna is a 30-year-old airport ground employee who works in the cargo section at the Mumbai International Airport. A resident of the Mira-Bhayandar suburb, Suvarna was a regular commuter on the Western Line network. According to railway police investigators, Suvarna did not have a known prior criminal record matching this profile, but he was carrying a large knife inside his personal bag on the night of the incident. This 2.11 minute video shows the real and grave problem affecting CR Mumbai suburban railway. This is Diva Junction station, this afternoon. The level crossing gate here blocks all six lines that means local and NATIONAL lines. This leads to detention of ALL trains on either side of the gate and MASSIVE commuter crowds piling up at all subsequent stations. The road vehicles clearly need to be on a road bridge & not blocking the crucial Mumbai railway like this. And guess what, the road bridge has been built, but the problem are the approaches. Yes. The bridge portion over the railway line is ready, but there is no land for approaches because there are structures, buildings and residents. Residents don't want to move and local landowners have alleged injustice. Was it all not thought before or planned? The Thane Municipal Corporation is now working on this to clear up the mess. Nevertheless, bureaucrats of any standard here have little say in the area since it is a political hotbed of every party. Every decision taken here is a race on political lines. The local public representatives are towering personalities but blinkered by narrow vision. The management at the gate too is poor. This afternoon, the MSF (Maharashtra Security Force) staff had been manning it and when it became unmanageable, RPF (Railway Protection Force) & GRP (Government Railway Police) had to be called (by station announcement) followed by the station staff at the site. The first thing that was done by them was taking pictures probably to prove their presence to the higher ups. The response was not quick but almost idle. It needed to be faster given the stakes (If they understood them.) But its all a mess that needs to be sorted at a different level not with the local cops. They have other priorities. The sad part is that all of this is affecting lakhs of commuters every single day. After the level crossing closed in about 20+ minutes, the first trains that came from both directions were massively crowded with commuters hanging out even in the afternoon non-peak hours. I managed to get in the first train. As it moved ahead to subsequent stations, the crowds got larger & aggressive as they had been waiting for a lonng time. Sadly, they are used to it and manage the lethal commute deftly. Those who can't end up becoming a statistic.
