Chris Hipkins with a train wreck of an interview as he attempted to defend Labour’s Fees-Free policy, of which he was the chief architect. At a price tag of more than two billion dollars, the scheme funded training for DJs, scuba divers, real estate agents, yoga instructors, and aromatherapy practitioners. The programme failed to meet three of its four stated objectives, with independent analysis showing enrolment barely budged, lower-income access didn’t improve, and the wealthy captured most of the subsidy while overall numbers even dipped in places. Yet, Hipkins still insists it was better to burden the taxpayer than to expect individuals to contribute towards their own training, which many would have undertaken regardless.

Nine days ago, Chris Hipkins stood before the media and had the gall to paint himself and Labour as models of transparency, honesty, and trustworthiness during Covid. This is despite a Royal Commission finding that Auckland was locked down for too long, official advice was ignored, and maintaining the Auckland boundary over summer was neither necessary nor remotely practical. This is on top of Hipkins’ own atrocious track record of ignoring facts, being economical with the truth and failing to correct the public record. Nothing short of disgraceful.

However, the Herald’s Shayne Currie appeared on Herald Now with Ryan Bridge to make it clear the allegations were being investigated, with Currie saying “I do think there is a public interest threshold here, that has been met.”

He doesn’t know what a woman is but even worse, opposition leader Chris Hipkins apparently thinks men can become pregnant. On Morning Report today Hipkins disagreed with Casey Costello’s directive to Health Ministry officials to use the term “pregnant woman” rather than “pregnant person”. Ms Costello is a NZ First MP and Associate Health Minister in the governing coalition. She says- "It is important that we have clarity about the people we are referring to when talking about women's health. Sex-specific language ensures that women know what health services they are entitled to and can access these easily, especially for those women with English as a second language.” Sounds quite sensible. No wonder then that the perpetually confused Mr Hipkins disagrees. Really, who in their right mind could vote for such a pasty dithering example of a man?

This is just awful optics for Chris Hipkins and Labour. Excluding the COVID years, this appears to be the first time in at least a decade that the Labour Party has not had a stall at Fieldays. This will come back to haunt them on the campaign trail. National Fieldays is more than a farming event it’s a major exhibition and celebration of small business, technology, the environment, innovation, investment, and rural New Zealand as a whole. By turning up with little more than a token appearance, Labour is effectively sending a clear message to the rural community: we don’t really care about you. It will be interesting to see whether the media presses Hipkins on this when he makes his brief visit today — assuming he actually turns up.

What Suppression Order? Why can't Hipkins talk? I have sent the following Official Information Act request this morning. Labour leader Chris Hipkins had claimed at a presser yesterday that no one in Auckland had raised the issue of the Covid 19 lock downs with him. Newstalk ZB, said Chris, were the only people still concerned with this. This remark earnt him the ire of presenter Heather Du Plessis-Allan. She said Hipkins's words implied the broadcaster was conducting an ideological campaign against Labour. A suggestion she angrily rejected. Heather wants you to tell Mr Hipkins that she is not the only one who is still angry about the lock downs. So if you see him around, feel free to do that.

Yesterday, Chris Hipkins publicly criticised Genesis Energy for not dipping into its own pockets to fund new generation projects, completely unaware that the company is in fact committing $1.6 billion to new generation. For the Labour leader to be so out of touch with the basic details of major new generation projects at a company in which the government holds a 51% stake, is a masterclass in incompetence. Hipkins then claimed there is "manufactured scarcity" in electricity supply, completely ignoring the massive barrier of resource consents, which this government's Fast-track Approvals Act is designed to address. Hipkins rounded off by criticising the proposed LNG terminal - while failing to make any mention of the record levels of Indonesian coal imported by Labour - which ironically coincided with his govt declaring a climate emergency.

Chris Hipkins has now admitted that the party’s flagship promise of “three free doctors’ visits a year” might not involve seeing a doctor at all. According to Labour’s own policy, these so-called “free doctors’ visits” can be used with nurse practitioners instead. The party openly admits this, yet it cannot even say how many of those visits will actually be with a real doctor. Meanwhile, Labour is marketing the policy as “free doctors’ visits” to win votes, only to quietly concede it’s just another primary care appointment. What doesn’t change, however, is that taxpayers will still be forced to pay for it through the party’s proposed capital gains tax.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins is asked if he sees himself as a "socialist" leader. Like recently elected New York mayor Zoran Mamdani. Eventually Hipkins admits to being a socialist or as he puts it, someone who thinks there is "a more active role for the state". Not that Mr Espiner would agree of course, but Mamdani is really a communist. So IMHO is Chris Hipkins. So far as NZ's pluralistic democracy will allow him to be anyway. The "more active role for the state" he wants is one that in his mind doesn't have any limits. Meaning he and his ilk will gradually, bit by bit by bit by bit, drag NZ into communism. If he is given the chance. Some would say we're already well on the way to this destination, or maybe even there already. In New Zealand, the Fabian or "frog in the slowly heating pot" strategy is working just the way it is meant to.

The role of Chris Hipkins as leader of the Labour Party has become untenable, as has Ayesha Verrall's position as health spokesperson. Hipkins appeared on Mike Hosking's ZB show yesterday morning and stated: “The actual advice that raised concerns about—you know—myocarditis for those younger people being vaccinated was never given to ministers.” Mike Hosking then asked: “Could you argue that, if you had got that advice, you would have one hundred percent acted on it?” Hipkins replied: “Of course I don’t know, but reading it now, yes—it raises concerns that I certainly would have had some very serious conversations …” This is in direct conflict with the damning answers provided to Winston Peters in the house today during question time.

Why didn’t Labour negotiate with the refinery owners..when they came to you three times? Good grief. This is a must listen! Labour’s Transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere has had an absolute shocker of an interview this morning on ZB with Heather du Plessis-Allan. Either he wasn’t across the numbers, Labour announced a major policy with zero modelling, or they’re too embarrassed to reveal the real cost to taxpayers — and how few people will actually save the amount they’re claiming. When HDPA pressed him on how many commuters would actually hit the $20 weekly fare cap, and what the true subsidy burden looks like (already ~87% on some services), Utikere dodged, deflected, and just repeated preset talking points. A two and a half year wait for this half baked cost of living “relief” stunt and Labour still has no idea what it’ll actually cost or how many people will truly benefit — is insane. Appearing on TVNZ Breakfast this morning, Hipkins was asked about the need for such laws in light of Brian Tamaki’s comments. He replied: “I still think there are legitimate issues here, gaps in the law.” A pretty clear signal they’ll try again — despite their last push drawing around 19,000 submissions, the vast majority opposed on free speech grounds.
