Training idea - passing drills Lately, we've been tinkering with passing drills with passive opposition for the players to adapt to and base decisions on. We often use coaches in such situations, but in this one we used players. Lots of technical details in a tiny context

Normally, we start with small-sided possession games, as shared before, but sometimes opt for five minutes of passing at the start, especially after rest days. By including (passive) opposition, I find that the exercises become slightly more meaningful.

This drill is very simple, but encourages, for example, technical repetition on receiving, which foot to play to, combination play, attracting press and adapting to the spaces left by the opponent, which are all mainstays of our style of play.

Thanks for the share David, I like the concept as mannequins etc are unrealistic to the game. My question would be around how do you want to defend as a team? Would this create bad habits for your defensive moment with this passive movement? Not a criticism - just a thought!

Cheers Jack, I would say the ”defending” in this one is completely different to how we press, so principally I would be against it, but for three/four minutes I think it’s fine. In broader terms that’s why I like using coaches, it’s better for us to do the ‘wrong’ thing

Doesn’t develop decision-making against passive opposition.
