“TRAITORS SHOULD BE HANGED.” That is what a Forever Canada counter-protester screeched at me at the Alberta Legislature today. She had been repeatedly screaming that Alberta independence supporters were “traitors,” so I walked over and asked the obvious question: What should happen to traitors? For a while she wouldn’t... answer. I got insults, swearing and a middle finger instead. Then she finally said it: “Traitors should be hanged.” Think about what is happening here. We are peacefully advocating for a democratic referendum. Canadians are legally free to advocate constitutional change, and the Supreme Court has already established a constitutional process that would follow a clear referendum mandate for secession. You can oppose Alberta independence. You can campaign against us. You can vote to remain Canadian. But advocating political change through speeches, signs, rallies and ballots does not make someone a traitor. And when someone repeatedly calls peaceful political opponents “traitors” and then says traitors should be hanged, I think people should hear exactly what was said. This rhetoric matters, especially when independence supporters have already reported hostility and dangerous behavior at public events. Watch the exchange yourself. What would Canada have to do before you finally said: enough? This is my full conversation with a group of “Forever Canadians” at the Alberta independence rally outside the Alberta Legislature on August 29. Earlier I posted some of the most heated moments from this exchange. This is the complete conversation, and I think the most important part is actually a much deeper question: Is there a line that Canada could cross that would make you stop supporting it? One woman accused me of being a “traitor” who had turned against my homeland. So I tried to explain why. You can genuinely love something and still reach a point where you can no longer support it. I use the deliberately extreme example of discovering that your spouse was a serial killer. You might love that person, but eventually some actions cross a line that love cannot excuse. That is how I feel about Canada. One of my biggest concerns is freedom of expression. Canada’s Charter protects freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, but those freedoms are subject to limits that governments can attempt to justify under Section 1. Canada also has newly introduced criminal hate-speech laws (bill C9). That has crossed a line. So I turned the question around on myself: what could Canada do that might convince me to become a federalist again? A constitutional guarantee of inalienable free-speech protections would go a long way. If Canadians had rights that governments could not easily limit when political circumstances changed, I would seriously reconsider my position. And I also explain something independence supporters sometimes fail to emphasize: There are still things I love about Canada. One example is our safety culture and the value we place on protecting workers. Having worked and travelled to places where those standards are bad, I know that Canada has built many institutions worth preserving. Alberta independence does not require pretending everything Canada created was bad. My argument is that lines have been crossed and because of that I have given up on Canada. I was at a massive Pro Independence rally in Rocky Mountain House and there was a small counter protest (7 people). One of the Forever Canada guys said Alberta independence supporters should not be using the poppy. Even if a veteran supports Alberta independence, thats wrong in his eyes! If you're a veteran tell me what you think. I’m not in the military, so I’m not going to pretend I speak for them, but I have a strong suspicion many veterans would reject the idea that support for Alberta independence cancels out their right to wear a poppy. He also appealed to his grandfather fighting in the war for Canada. I treated that seriously, because I do respect that. But then I asked the obvious question: what did his grandfather actually fight for? That should have been the easiest answer in the world. He could have said freedom of speech, freedom of religion, basic liberty, self-government, or the rights that make a country worth defending. But the only real answer he could give was the freedom to survive here". That answer stuck with me, because it reveals something deeper than I think he meant to reveal. Too many pro-Canada arguments today sound like that. Not a vision of freedom. Not a belief in sovereignty. Not even a confident defence of rights. Just survival. That is the irony. The people accusing Alberta independence supporters of being dangerous often sound like they have given up on the very idea of living freely and building something better. They do not speak like people with a dream. They speak like people hanging on. Then, after all that, he pushed the claim that the UCP are “banning books.” That is incredibly disingenuous. The issue is sexually explicit material in school libraries. The facts are easy to find, and reducing that debate to “book banning” is a dishonest slogan designed to inflame people instead of inform them. And yes, I think defending that kind of material in schools is shameful. If that is the hill some pro-Canada activists want to die on, they should at least be honest about what they are defending. This whole exchange says a lot. Alberta independence supporters are constantly asked to explain what we are for, while Canada’s defenders too often fall back on emotional slogans, weak smears, and a vision of life that amounts to little more than survival. For us Albertans, this movement is about Freedom! We want a society that reflects our values and protects our rights and we have the will do make that happen. Please sign the petition! In Sylvan Lake I spoke with an Iraqi Christian family who came to Canada in 2006 about what immigrants owe the country that welcomed them. Their answer was blunt: come here for a better life, obey Canadian law, work hard, care for your family and leave the conflicts of the old country behind. They told me newcomers should not come to Canada and then try to force the same politics, divisions or customs on everyone else. Canada gave their children safety and a future, and they believe immigrants have a duty to protect that. Then I told them I support Alberta independence. Their response surprised me: they support it too, and they have lawn signs in support of independence up! Support for Alberta independence is not limited to people whose families have lived here for generations. Immigrants who came here legally, worked hard and integrated can also see that Alberta is losing control over its culture, immigration and future. This is a powerful conversation. Listen to the end. Canadians used to be stereotyped as polite, tolerant, and willing to hear people out. That stereotype is gone inside the Forever Canada movement. When Alberta independence supporters go out and talk to people, we are constantly being sworn at, insulted, mocked, and threatened. And the thing is, we do not do it back. We keep having polite conversations. We keep putting up signs. We keep asking questions. We keep making a rational case for Alberta’s future. You would think people who want us to stay in Canada would try to persuade us with kindness, respect, and a better argument. Instead, they are determined to prove our point. If Canada is so worth staying in, why are so many of its loudest defenders so angry, intolerant, and hostile toward Albertans who simply want a democratic choice? That is not how you win people back. That is how you push them further away. I support Alberta independence.

This video captures something people need to see. I was having a polite conversation with a reasonable man who supports staying in Canada. We disagreed, but we were talking respectfully. Meanwhile, from way across the field, another Forever Canadian apparently spotted me and made a straight line toward me, visibly angry. I never saw him coming. I was recording over my shoulder, so the camera could see what I couldn’t. He approached quickly from directly behind me, and just before he reached me, a random bystander saw what was happening and stepped between us. I’m extremely grateful that he did. The man approaching me was shouting that I wasn’t allowed in the park, that this was “his park,” that I wasn’t allowed to be there, and that I was being disrespectful. The bystander stood his ground, exchanged a few choice words with him, and eventually got him turned around. Watching the footage afterward was unsettling. From my perspective, this man appeared to be approaching me aggressively from behind, and I had absolutely no idea he was there. There is something revealing about the contrast in this video. The man I was actually interviewing supports remaining in Canada, yet we were able to have a civil and reasonable disagreement. In many ways, reasonable centrists probably agree with Alberta independence supporters about a great deal—right up until the question of actually becoming independent. Then there is another faction: people who seem to treat peaceful advocacy for Alberta independence as something that makes us enemies. That attitude has consequences. People publicly supporting Alberta independence have already faced aggressive confrontations. We have seen supporters shoved, threatened, and in one particularly disturbing incident, an older man was pushed toward traffic and could have been seriously hurt. I don’t go looking for confrontations. I would much rather talk to people. But I’m also not going to be intimidated out of peacefully expressing my political beliefs. And this is where the leadership of the Forever Canada movement needs to think very carefully about their rhetoric. When political leaders repeatedly throw around words like “traitor” and “treason” to describe Albertans participating in a peaceful, democratic and lawful political process, some unstable people are going to take those words literally. If you convince someone that his political opponent is genuinely a traitor, it becomes much easier for that person to convince himself that aggression is justified. That is an incredibly dangerous road to go down. Albertans advocating independence are operating within Canada’s legal and democratic system. We are talking, organizing, campaigning and trying to persuade our neighbors. That disagreement should be settled with arguments and ballots—not intimidation. The full conversation with the reasonable Forever Canadian I was speaking with will be released soon. But I wanted to publish this part first because people should see what happened behind me—and because I’m very grateful to the stranger who saw the situation developing and stepped in before I even knew what was happening.

Then there is another faction: people who seem to treat peaceful advocacy for Alberta independence as something that makes us enemies. That attitude has consequences. People publicly supporting Alberta independence have already faced aggressive confrontations. We have seen supporters shoved, threatened, and in one particularly disturbing incident, an older man was pushed toward traffic and could have been seriously hurt. I don’t go looking for confrontations. I would much rather talk to people. But I’m also not going to be intimidated out of peacefully expressing my political beliefs. And this is where the leadership of the Forever Canada movement needs to think very carefully about their rhetoric. When political leaders repeatedly throw around words like “traitor” and “treason” to describe Albertans participating in a peaceful, democratic and lawful political process, some unstable people are going to take those words literally. If you convince someone that his political opponent is genuinely a traitor, it becomes much easier for that person to convince himself that aggression is justified. That is an incredibly dangerous road to go down. Albertans advocating independence are operating within Canada’s legal and democratic system. We are talking, organizing, campaigning and trying to persuade our neighbors. That disagreement should be settled with arguments and ballots—not intimidation. One of the most moving moments in Red Deer was talking to a kindly older woman standing on a busy street, waving an Alberta flag alongside a crowd of hundreds, and explaining exactly why she was there. She said she was doing it for her kids and her grandkids. She wants them to live free, be able to buy a house, get educated, and have a good life. That is what made the moment so powerful. This was not politics as a hobby. This was a grandmother looking at the direction of the country and deciding that if she wants a better future for the next generation, she has to step out into public and stand for it. That is deeply symbolic. Because when you see an older woman on the side of a major road waving a flag for Alberta independence, you are not looking at extremism. You are looking at concern, love, memory, and hope. You are looking at someone who has lived long enough to compare the Canada she remembers with the Canada we have now, and who no longer believes the current path will deliver a decent life for her family. She says very plainly that Canada has betrayed Alberta, that Ottawa wants Alberta’s money and resources but will not help Alberta prosper, and that this is why she now believes Alberta has to take care of itself. A guy in Calgary told me we’re not even allowed to discuss Alberta independence. Think about that. Apparently in Canada, we’re only allowed to talk about approved political topics. Then he said Alberta leaving Canada isn’t legal because one judge said the petition can’t be counted. So I asked him: If that decision was successfully appealed, would that change your mind? He said no. And that’s the whole point. For a lot of people, “it’s not legal” is not actually a legal argument. It’s just a talking point. The second the legal process doesn’t support them anymore, they still oppose it anyway. Quebec had two referendums. The Supreme Court already dealt with the issue of secession. But somehow when Alberta wants to even talk about it, people act like the conversation itself is forbidden. All the more reason for Alberta to quickly get off this dystopian train.

A few days ago Kathy Flett (insert Alberta flag here) and I had a woman walk up to us in the park and tell us she disagreed with Alberta independence. To be clear, I was already obviously recording our conversation with a LARGE camera. She said she didn’t want to be recorded, but then continued engaging in the conversation while the camera was still there. My position is simple: if you keep talking to someone who is clearly recording in a public place, that is consent enough for me. And in public, consent to record is not required anyway. It’s just a polite thing to ask or respect when possible. That said, I still blurred her identifiable features and even adjusted her voice because I’m not trying to embarrass anyone. I’m trying to have real conversations with Albertans. She talked about immigrating to Canada from Ireland as a child, how her family chose Canada because of Canadian values, and how she worries Alberta is moving away from things like a social safety net, education, professions, and liberal democracy. I don’t agree with her conclusion, but I do think the conversation revealed something important. A lot of people who oppose Alberta independence are angry at the Alberta government. Fair enough. So am I on many issues. But my answer is not to cling harder to a broken Canadian system. My answer is to ask whether the system itself is the problem. If both Ottawa and Edmonton keep failing people, then the answer isn’t more of the same. Alberta Independence is about the power to build something better.

I was having a friendly conversation with a Canadian citizen who immigrated from Chile 28 years ago. He does not support Alberta independence. He said he wants Canada to stay together. I was in Rocky Mountain House recently for a massive pro Alberta independence rally. Hundreds of people were waving Alberta flags and driving around town, and I found a small group of about seven pro-Canada counter protesters and decided to engage them. One man challenged me. He said that if Alberta independence loses, I should give up. I told him plainly that yes, if we lose, I will respect the will of the voters. Then I asked him the same question back. If Alberta wins, will you accept it? He reluctantly said yes, but the moment I pressed him on what percentage he would accept, he would not even engage with the argument. He would not clearly accept a majority. That tells you a lot. For too many on the pro-Canada side, this is not really about democracy. It is about imposing their will on Albertans who disagree with them, then using shame and fear to pressure us into silence. The second part of his argument was that the independence movement is hurting investment in Alberta. My answer was that Ottawa already did that and we have nothing to loose. For years, federal policy has blocked pipelines, restricted market access, and damaged confidence in Alberta’s future. Then, when Albertans finally start pushing back, we are told that we are the problem. He even claimed there is no tanker ban. That is factually false. Canada’s Oil Tanker Moratorium Act does restrict large crude oil and persistent-oil tankers from stopping, loading, or unloading at ports on BC’s north coast. The details matter, but the broader point stands: Ottawa has put real barriers in the way of Alberta getting its resources to market. His response was basically, if that is true, then why is Alberta still so rich and prosperous? My answer was simple: because we work hard, we have a lot going for us, and it takes a lot to sink us. But that does not prove Canada is working. It proves Alberta is strong enough to keep carrying a country that keeps dragging us down. The Trans Mountain Expansion was originally estimated at about $5.4 billion. It eventually climbed to $34.2 billion after the Liberal government took over the project. That is not a success story. That is what happens when Ottawa delays, blocks, politicizes, nationalizes, and mismanages a project that the private sector was once prepared to build. Then another man walked up, told me I had my facts wrong, and when I asked him to explain, he just walked away. Forever Canada means, I'm right, its impossible for me to be wrong, and grrrrrrr... Nearly half. That's higher than support in the general Alberta population, which sits at one in three. That alone should force a rethink. Now layer this on top: 301,000 signatures, collected by 7,000 volunteers. In a long, bitterly cold Alberta winter. And what happens next? They don’t get verified. Not counted. Not certified. They're stopped, wrapped in evidence tape like some crime scene because a judge has issued a stay blocking the validation process while a legal challenge from First Nations groups plays out. So, line this up. Nearly half of First Nations respondents are open to independence. But activist chiefs claiming to speak for all Indigenous Albertans want to protect the failing federalist status quo, not just for their people, but for all of us. Hundreds of thousands of Albertans signed a petition to at least ask the question. And the activist chiefs involved in the lawsuit are asking the court to freeze the process before it reaches a result. That’s the moment we’re in. A political question with massive public engagement, halted before it could be measured. There’s a gap here. Between what’s being argued in court by gatekeepers and what people are actually saying when you ask them directly. And it is not a small gap. Indigenous communities are not one voice. Albertans are not one voice. That is the whole point of a vote. Everyone gets their say on referendum day. So, here’s the question that does not go away: if the answer is so obvious, why not let the process finish? Why not count the signatures and drop the lawsuit? Why not let people speak? Because once it becomes one person, one vote, the outcome is not controlled anymore, and the narrative is shattered for good.

The thing she got wrong is expecting the world to be what it should be. Most problems can be traced to that today. People living in the world, angry it is not what they think it should be instead of recognizing it is what it is and you can ignore that and get bad outcomes, or recognize it and get better outcomes. It's really a choice between delusion and wisdom.
