An underrated aspect of the film is that the ending has Rocko fuming angry about how everything is changing, and he even blames Rachel for the changes, but even then, her transition is never brought up as one of the changes he hates and Rocko never misgenders her during his rant.

This turn with Rachel also works with her established issues in the show which was just trying to be happy - primarily in wanting to create art they want to make and feeling constricted by her father’s expectations. Rachel wanted to find purpose to her life and identity.

This was my first exposure to trans people, and I couldn’t be any happier.

I also think it was bold to have Ed initially not accept Rachel's transition. We're doing a lot better with LGBT+ media in animation but there's hardly anything that discusses the discrimination they still go through, especially from older generations.
