Trash in India is EVERYWHERE….. ……Almost EVERYWHERE. India has a trash problem, it’s everywhere! Why? But…..there’s no trash on “that side of the fence”. Indians clean the front of their homes everyday. Sweeping and washing, it’s a ceremony, and yet just over there is …..trash. India is full of... trash everywhere you look, but not on the other side of the fence. India has a long history, and up until a few years ago there simply was “no trash”. Everything came in “natural” wrappers or containers. Banana leaves or bamboo made fine containers, then for thousands of years, you simply threw the “natural container” away. It melted back into the earth, naturally. All those natural containers have been replaced by plastics, but India still throws it on the ground. One reason I believe there is so much trash. Agreed and it’s mostly lack of civic sense, which should start mostly in schools as the parents don’t have it. It pains my heart to see the country like this.

I’m still trying to figure it out. Other countries DO this as well, but not at the scale of India. It’s the transition from old life to the modern world. It will take time.

India should solve this problem. One civic movement may be required. It should start from schools

If every Indian simply spent 1 minute each picking up a piece of trash…..the country would be free of trash. But then where does it go? Less plastic is the answer.

India's garbage/trash problem is caste problem. Here majority thinks they have the right to produce garbage&litter and some born to clean that.Untill this system is removed we won't have clean society For every citizen mandatory civics duty should be imposed Everyone has to clean

I think the bigger issue is not that people don’t know the right behaviour-it’s that they don’t always feel responsible for public spaces. The same people who use dustbins at airports, stand in queues, & follow rules abroad often do the same in India.

I like ur take here. But Indians lack civic sense, myself included. While I don't throw away waste, don't directly pollute water bodies or drive on thw wrong side, I do honk and do other Indian stuff like crazy overtaking.

Yes sir I say this to my mom and others often, as much as we try to clean our house of we put only 10% efforts to clean our Roads and streets it will be cleanest country but people here just don't think that that road and street outside is also their place only and also it's civic sense problem many have never been taught that trash should be in trash bin not on roads and streets

Thank you for trying, kind sir, but no, this is not because Indians habituated to throwing away natural materials that melted away. It's because we are habituated to someone else being responsible for cleaning up after us.

We have to confront ourselves as a society about this…few cities have already shown the way…Indore is one example- they have shown the way. Lucknow I believe is getting better…and many cities…we should solve this once and for all in next few years..

Thats because constitution took away the rights and duties of communities to manage communal areas and made it the job of the municipality, which doesnt care enough . Even today u can see the village is very clean because of social control and a sense of ownership.

True. Even in west indians are throwing trash. Indian family in moving van threw trash at me in US and laughed about it.

I live in the west and get peed off when I see a tiny foil or paper on the road near my house of on the road, I make sure the council sends the big road sweeping machine or the litter pickers to keep everything clean, it’s horrible to see so much disposed garbage.
