Okay, I'm wrong. I thought I wasn't going to see any more humanoid robots before I left China, but as I'm walking to my gate, what do I see? A bunch of people filming a dancing Agibot humanoid. I think in six months these things will be everywhere, in every shopping center; the proliferation is quite fast. Again, I don't think they have much purpose, but it is some revenue for the humanoid makers, and it gets people really ready for a society where they feel very comfortable with humanoids.

NAVIAI-I3, a more robust humanoid robot, was launched by the Zhejiang Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center. Standing 1.8 meters tall, it can run like a human and walk on various terrains. This humanoid robot appears to be primarily designed for specialized industrial tasks, such as security patrols in underground parking lots. They previously launched the lightweight bipedal NVAI-2 and a wheeled humanoid robot. The bipedal robot is used in manufacturing operations, while the wheeled humanoid robot is used for unstructured, flexible tasks such as warehouse sorting, supermarket shelving, and office cleaning. This is Figure III announced today. I’m sorry but every other form factor besides humanoids will be crushed 🦾🤖🦾 I keep hearing people starting specialized robotics companies, “like robots for laundry”. And the pitch is: “you don’t need a humanoid form factor to do laundry, it can be much simpler”. That’s true. But, humanoids can do everything and will become the default form factor and so will be mass manufactured and so will be extremely cheap compared to lower volume robots. Its so obvious, it will be humanoids doing laundry, not a specialized laundry robot 🤦‍♂️ The one main exception to that might be line work in a factory where you do just need the arms and you can mass manufacture them (a al Proception)

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI lead, during a GTC discussion, highlighting the fundamental similarity in AI approaches for self-driving cars and humanoid robots: - Hierarchical decision making is useful, but it has to be done as part of the same decision-making process as lower-level controls. - We haven't seen the long tail of humanoid robotics, but Tesla has seen the long tail of self-driving, where high and low-level decisions have to be jointly made at a pretty high framerate. - Optimus's architecture is designed in a similar way, where there's a hierarchy but it's all running as part of the same model and the latencies involved in decision making are well modeled. - This architecture will scale quite well with humanoid robots. - The distinction of the decision-making levels is only in the developer's mind. For the model, it's a continuous space of decision making, where there are dials available to make them more fine or coarse. - Humanoids have more sensor modalities and higher degrees of freedom compared to self-driving, but the fundamental constraints remain the same: you need to make real-time decisions. There's obviously a hierarchy to these control signal outputs, but the lowest frequency cannot be too low, because the safety of the robot cannot depend upon things running at very low frequencies.

Turning video into humanoid robot motion! 🤳🏼 Training humanoid robots needs huge amounts of motion data, but real-world capture doesn’t scale. Mocap is expensive, dangerous edge cases are rare, and you can’t ask humans to repeatedly fall or crash. Video2Robot tackles this by converting videos into physics-grounded humanoid simulations. Motion is generated to respect balance, inertia, ground contact, and joint limits, then directly retargeted to robot simulators. One prompt can generate a full humanoid motion sequence, including multi-agent interactions and failure cases like falls or collisions, scenarios that are hard or impossible to capture safely in the real world. The pipeline is model-agnostic and works with existing video generators, making it a practical way to scale data for robots. If robots are going to operate in the real world, they need to be trained on the failures too, not just the perfect demos. I'm simply saying that AGI seems likely to be an emergent property of what we're doing, because we're creating all these autonomous cars and autonomous humanoids that are actually a truly gigantic data stream that's coming in and being processed. It's by far the most amount of real-world data, and data you can't get by just searching the Internet, because you have to be out there in the world and interacting with people and interacting with the roads. Earth is a big place, and reality is messy and complicated. If you've got tens or hundreds of millions of autonomous vehicles and maybe even a comparable number of humanoids, maybe more than that, on the humanoid front, well, that's just the most amount of data. And if that video is being processed, it just seems likely that the cars will definitely get way better than human drivers, and the humanoid robots will become increasingly indistinguishable from humans, perhaps. Once you have humanoid robots, the actual economic output potential is tremendous. It’s really unlimited. Potentially we can have an economy 10x the size of the current global economy.” We are watching the early stages of a robotics inflection point. A lot is about to change.
