Travis Kalanick says founders should date ideas before committing to them: "I have lots of ideas all the time. I'm an idea factory. But other people have great ideas, too." "I like to say, you go out on a date with the idea. Was it a good date? Did... show more

Dating the idea before marrying it is such a great mental model.

My ideas keep bangin other founders.

sure, whatever gets you to commit eventually

exactly why founders should stay single, more time to date ideas

Exploring ideas before committing could open significant growth avenues for ambitious entrepreneurs.

Building a quick proof-of-concept is the ultimate first date. You find immediately if the architecture and the workflow are actually worth committing to before scaling.

Love this framing.

Seems like a great guy. Also like the phrasing that you conceive an idea.

love this idea. is parallel dating allowed

dating ideas is just procrastination with a fancy name

My idea and I are going through a rough patch right now... again! But the make-up coding sessions are totally worth it and I know we'll be inseparable again in a day or two! It's complicated but it works. 🤷🏾♂️

Travis should come to @spc ;)

That hits the nail on the head. Most founders jump all in the second they get an idea, never stopping to check if it actually fits them. Dating your idea to polish it before committing makes way more sense. Figuring out the right direction always beats rushing blindly into the wrong road.

The last date I went on was in 1974. Fun date, lousy marriage. It's a good point though. Trust your instincts, not your motives. When something feels "right," you know.

The "who you are decides which idea works" part is the real point The same idea fails for one person and clicks for another

The second date is where the idea meets reality. Does the problem keep showing up? Will someone change behavior or pay to solve it? Founder instinct matters, but repeated evidence is what turns attraction into commitment.

my goat

I try to be in touch with myself every night. Stay agile and focus on an idea until in comes to me or comes to me if that makes sense.

Quite an insightful and useful sharing. Thanks @travisk for sharing this invaluable experience with the world.

Having 100 ideas means nothing. Knowing which one is worth your next 5 years is the real skill.

pre-seed dating, but venture capital is a marriage with dilution

I had a college counselor tell me the ideal job for me is to be the guy they keep in the back room to quietly work on new ideas. Dating those ideas was never part of our discussion. Despite filling notebooks in high school, I stopped writing most ideas down a long time ago.

I wrote similar, have a read on my profile

Dating beats marrying the first idea, for sure, but how do you actually judge the date?
