With all the memes and fictions showing more "personality " to the necrons, its easy to forget sometimes just how infinitely cruel they can be. Not through hate or malice necessarily, but indifference- we mean nothing to them.

In the Novel Kasrkin, there's a necron lord (who had possibly gone senile and is very nice to the protagonists) who spent the last 60 million years trying to make an orrary out of sand. Only at the end of the story does he learn that damp sand clumps better then dry sand.
