My grandpa grew up with a tree in his backyard that had both sweet and sour cherries. His dad grafted one type of cherry tree branch onto another type's trunk and the end result was a tree that produced both. It honestly seems like genius farming. Twice the fruit variety on a smaller patch of land.

Would the first example actually work considering the xylem and phloem channels would not be lined up?

My grandfather did this, we had apple trees with few different apples on single tree.

The first one is also particularly handy if you get a flat tire on the way to the tree.
