Matthew Rhys says falling in love with Keri Russell while filming The Americans was something he never expected to happen again after a previous relationship with a co-star ended badly. “I remember at the time going, ‘Oh, no.’ Because I wouldn’t advise it.” But despite trying to avoid it, Rhys says he couldn’t fight what was happening. “And then kind of in my mid-30s, The Americans happens, and I was like, ‘Oh, no. I was playing around with my scaling code and thought it would be cool to play the current Lufthoheit service screen on a CRT on the tripple bypassed MD2 i got recently. I've made the code a bit more efficient and added a whole scale factor so now it scales 320 pixels wide x 4 times ( source art width ) . So the ship here is scaled 4x larger than the one we scale at the entrance to the cave level . I'm working on 5x next . Scaler and Rotater are written in 68k assembly for speed . Finally I got the non-safe interupts (eg register allocation / seperation ) to work which yielded a big speed gain . Basically you reserve some of the 68ks registers only for use in the Horizontal Interupts (hints) and other code outside the Hints must not use them during the Hints that are occuring every line. The Hints are doing the vertical scaling work . Its a bit tricky to syncronise and protect but finally it worked. The MDs VDP is scaling vertically (its still not free) , the 68k cpu is scaling the ship horizontally . Bob MacIntyre was given a conduct warning by the rules officials today the same as Jon Rahm earlier this week. He reacted to it after the round and said he would have deserved a two shot penalty if he was given one: “Yeah, yeah, but I expect to get a few of them in my career. Yeah, I run hot. So be it… “I'm going to do it for the rest of my career. I try and toe the line, but when you feel like -- when you feel you're playing a golf course that you can hit it pretty much anywhere and there's no real punishment and then you do hit one slightly off line and you get the biggest punishment you can possibly get, it's just a sore one. Again, I'm going to react aggressively at times. Part of my DNA.” When asked if it’s tricky to understand how the rule is implemented, he said: “To be honest, I couldn't care less. If I got a two-shot penalty, it's my fault. A warning, it's my fault. I don't really worry about it.” Bob shot rounds of 67, 69, 71 and 71 to currently sit in T29 at The Open. ANIMATION TIMING a Thread 🧵 by “F” #Animation timing is an EXTREMELY tricky, specialized art form all its own, and VERY few people are actually, truly “great” at it. The scene below from the first #FairlyOddParents movie “Abra-Catastrophe” was storyboarded, designed, directed, written and TIMED by me. It looks like shit. Why? Because someone other than me who was in a role of authority to do so went in and changed my original timing. This scene was supposed to be frantic, kinetic, exciting and energized. Instead, it’s klunky, slow and awkward. (FUN FACT: I intended it to be a nod to the Yoda/Dooku duel in “Attack of the Clones”) This was a stylistic choice somebody who wasn’t me made. Choices like this are usually made out of a fear that the audience won’t be able to follow along if it moves too quickly, so what often happens is they will call for three times as many in betweens as necessary to “play it safe” and then speed it up in post production. The result is always ugly and jarring. It winds up looking like it doesn’t belong. Animation timing is a precise and delicate art form, and to do it well you need to have CONFIDENCE in your choices. In China, you can't make misleading claims in advertisements. That gets tricky when an AI actor is your brand ambassador. In my last newsletter, I mentioned the success of the Chinese short AI drama "Laid-Off Girl" (被裁掉的女孩) and its protagonist, Fang Taozi (方桃子). She might be virtual, but she's not cheap. Having her appear in an ad campaign of less than 60 seconds already costs 258,000 yuan (38.235 USD). For the Chinese cosmetic contact-lens brand Nutnutlook/坚果力, their campaign featuring the AI actress might turn out to be much more costly than that. The ad, in which Fang Taozi claims her contact lenses feel so comfortable ("戴美瞳很舒服"), has been flagged by market regulators because it's a "fabricated personal experience": Fang Taozi has no physical eyes and therefore cannot actually wear contact lenses.😂 The regulators are extra strict when it comes to advertisements for medical devices (cosmetic contact lenses also fall within this category). This ad is now under investigation, and once it's officially confirmed to have violated China's Advertising Laws, Nutnutlook could be fined 3-5 times the original advertising fee. Many netizens agree with the regulators and don't like AI actors promoting these kinds of physical products. "If it's an AI actor promoting it, let an AI person buy it." Others, however, don't see an issue with it: "It's not like when it's a real person we can actually believe what they're saying anyway."

That extra cam saved me from a life-altering accident. This week, “Sketchy” Andy Lewis—a beloved character in the outdoor community—died in a base jumping accident. He was an accomplished climber, slackliner, and base jumper. He performed with Madonna at Super Bowl XLVI. As his nickname implies, Andy was notorious for pushing the limits in a sport that is already statistically one of the deadliest. He opened several tricky sub-100 foot exits in the Moab area. The world needs people like Sketchy Andy who push the limits of what’s possible. It’s important to follow our passion and live while we’re alive. But don't ignore the math. As Eli told me all those years ago, everything is a numbers game. Math is coldly indifferent to our passion, and even skill has its limits. It’s one thing to take a one-in-a-thousand risk once or twice. But if you make it a lifestyle, the math eventually catches up with you. R.I.P. Sketchy Andy.

** SEGA GENESIS - LUFTHOHEIT - Tunnel Stage Preview ** We are pleased to show an early preview of part of our Tunnel/ Vortex Stage. Big shout out to Carsten666 for his gorgeous Graphics, CYBERDEOUS - Crouzet Laurent for the amazingly well matched Audio to this level, Stephane for creating SGDK in the first place and being very supportive with new features in SGDK also. Technically this stage was a bit of a challenge, some notes below re this. To drive the rolling texture of the background - 40 horizontal interrupts are used, executing 120 scanlines of color change, changing 5 colors per line = 600 color changes per frame. Variable spaced interrupts are used for expansion / compression effect. Four stages of brightness used for every texture / pattern , darkest in the center of screen , brightest top & bottom. New colors created by alternating two similar colors at 60 hz, for seams between brightness regions to increase the blending between regions. Co-operative Multi-threading system used to reclaim huge amounts of CPU within the color change interrupts. For example all rolling Cannon & Cannon bullets and Debris are moved using this technique - up to 25% of total CPU can be reclaimed ( its normally wasted polling for rhs/hblank ). Heatseeking missiles, these need trajectory's recalculated frequently and doing that at speed can be tricky - lots of missiles launched at Mid video and its the heaviest CPU load in the demo ( these are not using the Multi-threading technique yet ). Variable rate collision checking, as bullets gets very close to player the checking is done at 60 fps, as they get further away the checking drops off rapidly - this saves cpu. Runs 60 FPS at all times, works on real HW also but captured on emulator as my phone doesnt take 60hz video without getting out of sync. Intro & Foreground effects are coming, currently no foreground is present as its not quite baked enough yet, we have some cool things we will do with the extra plane yet. RUSH HOUR TORTURE TEST W/ FSD V14.1.3! Last night I had some time to kill after my workout and decided to put FSD v14.1.3 to the test once again in rush hour. Instead of going straight home from the gym, we went to Best Buy, as well as other parts of the metro where we previously experienced repeated issues with v13. Along the way, we recognized several improvements, including proper identification and avoidance of an approaching of police vehicle which was super exciting!
