It was daring in its directness, with a leading character who’s an inch short of being a pimp, and yet by injecting a love story, Billy made you care about this man. Nine out of ten people watching the film don’t realize they’re getting a message about the lack of morals and ethics in the world of business, and in society in general. It’s rare that you can touch people dramatically and comedically with the same story. I don’t know another writer alive who has the guts to have Shirley MacLaine in one room of this guy’s apartment who is committing suicide, and in the other is a hooker he’s picked up.
