But there are rules in the Bible for marriage. The reason that the government is involved is because for a time, -England- women were expected to live as a traditional wife and when their husbands didn’t want to be married anymore. the women were left destitute. That is why the government got involved. If we lived in a Christian community/society, divorce would be frowned upon and people would try harder. It is very hard to live as a Christian in a non-Christian societies but worth it ✝️

I used to have this perspective. However, I modify my take on this. The government does have a responsibility to keep society peaceful by it’s laws. And the best way to do that is to protect the family unit. The family unit is what makes healthy societies.

It’s basically a threesome. As you stand at the altar getting married, the government rep is also there, saying; “Look, the government is screwing you both one way or another, might as well make it official”…

Tristan is correct. And it’s not just marriage. The state has invaded the entire family unit. From the moment we are born and assigned a tax number, entered into a rigid education system, psyoped into getting a degree, etc. The community is replaced with the State.

This isn’t quite true. Government has always been involved in the regulation of marriage. In Hammurabi’s code, ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, imperial China… the political authority of society has been adjudicating, defining, and legitimizing marriage for like 4000 years.

Also, the First Amendment prohibits the government from making laws respecting any establishment of religion. Marriage is historically an establishment of religion.

He is correct. The Bible teaches marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman from the garden in Genesis throughout the Scriptures. Government is not to be involved in that God-given covenant of marriage.

The government has always been involved in marriage. Legal protections and marriage laws go back thousands of years. For example the Babylonians address marriage contracts, divorce rights and property in Hammurabi’s code in 1754 B.C. This isn’t something new.

You don’t have to include the gov, but there are decent benefits and protections if you do. And of course there are risks, but your willingness to accept them and make that very public and official declaration of your marriage is part of what gives the commitment real meaning
