Yeah, as a kid in the 80s who was always into computers, I was under the solid impression that they used a Cray supercomputer for the CGI in Tron. No internet back then, so everything was pure hearsay and playground/magazine lore. That said, I did know as a kid that a Cray was actually used for the CGI in The Last Starfighter.

Can someone enlighten me as to why the film made in 1982 is so much better than any of the modern day attempts? My guess is the original predates filmmakers using SFX as a crutch and had to write/shoot engaging stories. Tron is such a cool universe and it's being wasted.

They ruled that using CGI was basically cheating and gave filmmakers an unfair advantage over traditional practical effects and hand animation. That “cheating” technique is now the foundation of every major blockbuster for the past 20+ years. Well done, Tron. The future you predicted won. ⚡ Bonus wild fact: The official Tron arcade game (released by Bally Midway right after the film) actually out-grossed the movie. While the film made about $33–50 million worldwide at the box office, the arcade cabinets sold around 10,000 units and raked in an estimated $100–200 million in quarters during its peak years. It even won Coin-Operated Game of the Year. What amazes me most is that there was never a proper Commodore 64 adaptation. Almost every other big 80s sci-fi movie got turned into a C64 game… but the one literally set inside a computer world with light cycle races? Nope.
