Tropical activity is ramping up in the Atlantic Basin. Along with Hurricane Gabrielle, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical disturbances in the central Atlantic for potential development this week.

As we enter July, models anticipate the Atlantic to remain generally quiet hurricane-wise. El Niño is dominating the current and forecast conditions in the tropical Atlantic, manifesting as high shear in the Caribbean and less thunderstorm activity than normal. By contrast, the eastern Pacific is expected to spring to life, supported by the El Niño background state. Watch the continuous cyclone activity (orange blobs) in this 35-day GEFS forecast, versus the rather docile Atlantic. We can't guarantee no Atlantic storms in July, especially with the always-present risk of so-called "home grown" development along old cold fronts that drape across the SW Atlantic and Gulf region. But things seem likely to stay in check for a while.

It’s quiet - now - as we head into peak season, but that may change soon. The Atlantic has been under large scale sinking, crushing tropical development. But rising air from the Pacific is rounding the bend, and heading into the Atlantic in the coming weeks. That will cause favorable conditions for hurricanes to develop especially by mid September, but there’s a wave moving off Africa right now with a good chance of development later this week/weekend. The hope is that strong cold fronts in the US will block these Atlantic storms from reaching the US. Stay tuned. (Hurricane pictured is merely an illustration, not a real storm) #fyp # hurricane

Major Hurricane #Kirk (cat 4) is now in the Atlantic. It will continue moving towards Europe. 🧐 By mid-week, it is expected to weaken into a post-tropical storm and reach France (see wind gust map for the next 5 days).

The signal for tropical development is getting stronger. This is the Euro AI ensemble. It develops two strong waves exiting the African Coast in 1-2 weeks. The chance of formation of at least one of these is pretty decent. But the trip across the Atlantic won’t be easy, with dusty air in the deep tropics and #elnino fueled strong wind shear in the Caribbean. So if the storm/s form they will struggle for success. Deep in extreme drought, #Florida needs a good soaking. Good news: there’s strong model support for a tropical connnection setting up across Florida in about 8-12 days! This should deliver some widespread significant rain to the state and there’s even the outside chance of weak tropical development nearby, as #hurricane season begins. Although I’d say the chance is remote. Still the potential for a good soaking #rain is high.
