As the SDF-Damascus clashes unfolded, the Smelka border crossing between Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and the remaining SDF-controlled strip in northeast Syria saw its strategic importance come to the forefront: What remains little known is how Turkey has transformed Smelka into one of the most heavily surveilled border crossings in the Middle East. Turkey monitors and tracks this route through two key methods. First, no truck can cross Smelka without prior coordination with either the Barzani Charity Foundation or the KRG’s Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) which both have worked and coordinate with the Turkish authorities. Then there is the second layer, which is more decisive: Turkey’s surveillance advantage at this specific location. Smelka is not deep inside Syrian territory. It sits just over a kilometer from the Turkish border. The crossing area on the Iraq-Syria side is relatively flat, but the Turkish side overlooking it rises to higher ground, creating natural sightlines and making long-range observation easier than at many other crossings. At the tri-border area, the Turkish side includes facilities and elevated points that function, in effect, as persistent monitoring positions. From these elevated positions, Turkey uses advanced electro-optical systems such as Aselsan’s DragonEye, a system specifically designed for border surveillance that can read every truck’s licence plate, identify the driver’s face, and see exactly what the cargo looks like from the outside, even at night. These systems use thermal imaging, allowing them to observe traffic just as clearly in pitch-black darkness. Over a thousand DragonEye units have been delivered to Turkish border forces and security posts for precisely this purpose. Turkey’s thermal profiling tools add another layer. They use thermal imagers to examine truck engines and cargo areas. From a distance, they can tell if a truck is a refrigerated unit but the cooling system is off, yet the driver is acting secretively: a red flag. If a truck is a canvas-covered flatbed, thermal cameras can easily detect the heat signatures of people hiding inside the cargo area. Turkey also operates sophisticated signals intelligence arrays in this border triangle, capabilities that have been documented providing real-time SIGINT and electronic intelligence to Turkish joint command centres during cross-border operations. They do not just watch the truck; they listen to the driver’s mobile phone and radio. Turkey also creates “pattern of life” maps using its drone fleet, primarily Bayraktar TB2s and ANKAs, which frequently patrol this tri-border area. Rather than checking a truck at the bridge, a drone can simply follow a suspicious vehicle after it crosses into Syria. If a truck crosses Smelka and drives to a civilian market, it is ignored. If it crosses and drives directly to a known SDF military tunnel or ammunition depot, Turkey logs it as a military supply run. While high-risk smuggling routes that the SDF or PKK use for cross-border movement may exist, none pass through Smelka or the known routes, which are heavily monitored. 🇺🇳UN: Aid Efforts Expanding, But Gaza Still Faces Huge Gaps Under the ceasefire terms, at least 600 aid trucks were meant to enter Gaza daily — but Israel continues to block most shipments and only allow a trickle. On Wednesday, just 127 UN-coordinated trucks were allowed through the Kerem Shalom and Kissufim crossings, carrying food, tents, medical supplies, and 340,000 litres of diesel. Five UN-led missions also collected medical equipment, insulin, and cholera kits. The UN says humanitarian operations are scaling up under its 60-day response plan, with agencies now distributing over one million hot meals daily across the Strip. In northern Gaza, six UN-supported bakeries have resumed production and families are receiving food parcels with rice, canned goods, and cooking oil. Since the October 10 ceasefire, more than 20 new nutrition sites have opened, bringing the total to 150. Over 400 sites were operational before Israel’s total siege. Mobile teams providing health and nutrition support have doubled to 20, reaching remote and devastated areas. A North African-led convoy, known as “Sumoud” (Arabic for steadfastness), has departed Tunis and is en route to Gaza. You can track their progress at the link below. Comprised of hundreds of activists — including doctors, lawyers, journalists, and youth organizers — the group aims to break Israel’s siege on Gaza by land. More details: ▪️ The convoy includes 14 buses and around 100 private vehicles, carrying participants from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, and Libya. ▪️ Organizers say it’s a civil society act of resistance, not a traditional aid mission, and is intended to pressure Egypt to open the Rafah crossing. ▪️ The group marched through Libya yesterday, chanting “Resistance, resistance” and “To Gaza we go by the millions,” according to AFP. ▪️ Though unlikely to enter Gaza, they plan to reach Rafah via Egypt, aiming to maintain a visible presence until land access is granted. ▪️ The convoy’s launch coincided with Israel’s interception of the Madleen flotilla, highlighting growing cross-border solidarity efforts.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is out of control. This is not from a natural disaster, this is not due to scarcity of goods, or the lack of relief organizations operating in Gaza. The occupation is weaponizing starvation. Israel has not let any aid into Gaza, and they control each border crossing. Thousands of trucks are waiting to enter, to provide food, medication, necessities, to men, women, children, the sick, and the elderly. The ONLY entity stopping this life saving aid coming in is the apartheid, illegitimate state, of Israel. Families plea for anything at all to help them survive. Since the ending of the ceasefire, 100,000 people have been forcefully displaced from Rafah with only the clothes on their backs, or not even that as the last man explains. Over 64% of Gaza is inaccessible to international NGOs due to the occupations orders and bombardments. Everyone is in need. Help us assist these families. I have just completed a trip to the Rafah crossing with European Parliament colleagues from Renew Europe - the first Parliamentary delegation to secure access to the area. The purpose of the visit was to see first hand the international humanitarian effort that is underway and the difficulties that are being faced with getting the aid into Gaza. On the way there we passed hundreds of trucks, for as far as the eye could see, carrying basic humanitarian supplies, all being held up and waiting to cross into Gaza. Everything that goes across has to be cleared by the Israeli government who have listed thousands of items, such as solar panels, water tubes and batteries, as being 'dual use' i.e capable of military use. Both EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid 🇪🇺 & Irish Aid are very much present and waiting to cross. I saw a number of trucks with family tents donated by the Irish Government at a logistics hub near Rafah. The tent poles are removed as they are on the 'Dual list' and are deemed capable of military operation. I expected the crossing itself to be chaotic however it was weirdly quiet - which is worrying. What should be a bustling humanitarian hub with non-stop traffic and activity, consisted only of the occasional truck getting through - one passed through in the hour we were there. At the border, people we spoke to said that our visit and the fact that IDF know about it means that no bombing would occur until we had left. When the president of the ICRC visited recently - bombing resumed 30 mins after the visit ended. Bombings, gunfire & drone activity is a daily reality for people who are working at the Rafah crossing. People who are helping evacuate the wounded, the sick and dual nationals wishing to leave are in danger every day. Humanitarian access is a basic requirement for any conflict. It is truly astonishing to think that Rafah is the only crossing point. There would be more truck movements at a busy supermarket in Ireland and yet, behind the gates at Rafah, 2.3 million people are suffering for want of food, water, medicine & fuel. I have no doubt that Israel has made the strategic decision to deliberately frustrate the international humanitarian effort. I will be on This Week RTÉ after 1pm to discuss this.

What should be a bustling humanitarian hub with non-stop traffic and activity, consisted only of the occasional truck getting through - one passed through in the hour we were there. At the border, people we spoke to said that our visit and the fact that IDF know about it means that no bombing would occur until we had left. When the president of the ICRC visited recently - bombing resumed 30 mins after the visit ended. Bombings, gunfire & drone activity is a daily reality for people who are working at the Rafah crossing. People who are helping evacuate the wounded, the sick and dual nationals wishing to leave are in danger every day. Humanitarian access is a basic requirement for any conflict. It is truly astonishing to think that Rafah is the only crossing point. There would be more truck movements at a busy supermarket in Ireland and yet, behind the gates at Rafah, 2.3 million people are suffering for want of food, water, medicine & fuel. I have no doubt that Israel has made the strategic decision to deliberately frustrate the international humanitarian effort. I will be on This Week RTÉ after 1pm to discuss this.

They shared a propaganda video of the two traumatized children being “cared for” by Hamas terrorists, after their mother had been murdered in front of them and before they were kidnapped. Hamas also tried to exploit a video of Avital and the children making their way back from Gaza, claiming they freed a mother and her children out of the goodness of their hearts.
