Congress has a constitutional duty to provide oversight of the Executive Branch to hold presidential admins accountable to the people. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) is set to introduce “The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act,” which would DESTROY the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to arrest and hold dangerous illegal aliens. The bill already has 123 Democrat co-sponsors. “This bill brings dignity, justice, oversight, and accountability to the detention system by repealing mandatory detention, prohibiting the detention of families and children in family detention, phasing out the use of private detention facilities and jails, and requiring DHS to establish civil detention standards.” “The bill creates a presumption of release and imposes a higher burden of proof to detain primary caregivers and vulnerable populations. The bill also mandates the DHS Inspector General to conduct unannounced inspections and requires DHS to admit Members of Congress to detention facilities for unannounced inspections.” What a joke!

We are not angry enough. Every day, the violent, racist Trump regime is destroying lives, violating basic human rights, and testing what this country will tolerate. We need mass, peaceful protests across this country - at scale. Right now. Nobody is coming to save us. Justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Justice for Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Justice for the tens of thousands of people locked up in ICE detention centers, abused and denied basic dignity. Justice for the people we’ve shackled and deported back to violence, repression, or to third countries they have no connection to. If this doesn’t move us into the streets, what will?

One of my constituents died in ICE custody two weeks ago, so I went to Philadelphia's Federal Detention Center, and 2 things stood out to me: 1. This is a federal prison holding largely people who have not committed a crime. 2. The people running these ICE facilities don't understand that the rule of law is not optional. Honoring your rights is not optional. We're going to keep up the fight for all of our rights in court and in Congress. Stand with us and make your voice heard.
