We demand to see the correspondence between the insurance companies and the state of California over the past few years. Insurance companies likely warned the state: “Take action, or we can’t protect your residents.” A subpoena for those communications could reveal exactly why this crisis unfolded the way it did and why insurance companies dropped residents’ fire policies just months….sometimes week….before fire started. We don’t have to wonder why insurance companies were canceling policies left and right in California. The reasons are glaring…..mismanagement and negligence at the state level left them no choice. From failing to manage forest floors to prioritizing the delta smelt over proper water management, California’s policies have worsened drought conditions and amplified wildfire risks. Instead of stepping up, Governor Newsom, you ignored the warnings, failed to act, and left your citizens to bear the consequences. The responsibility lies squarely on your shoulders.
