My best guess would be, since the photons of light typically act like particles, when the space between the two balls is too small for the particles to get through, the shadows connect in multiple places simultaneously, seemingly even after you stop moving the balls.

If you look closely the balls are not at the same distance. one ball is slightly closer to the light then the other, and they are over lapping. mystery solved
