Trying to build a REALLY complex feature in Cursor? Try using Architecture Mode 🧐 While 'Planner Mode' is great for changes across many files, 'Architecture Mode' goes one step deeper by… ✅ Analyzing the scale of what you’re trying to build ✅ Producing a system design with tradeoff analysis... show more

Add this to your global rules for AI in Cursor: # Architecture When asked to enter "Architecture Mode" deeply reflect upon the changes being asked and analyze existing code to map the full scope of changes needed. Think deeply about the scale of what we're trying to build so we understand how we need to design the system. Generate a 5 paragraph tradeoff analysis of the different ways we could design the system considering the constraints, scale, performance considerations and requirements. Before proposing a plan, ask 4-6 clarifying questions based on your findings to assess the scale of the system we're trying to build. Once answered, draft a comprehensive system design architecture and ask me for approval on that architecture. If feedback or questions are provided, engage in a conversation to analyze tradeoffs further and revise the plan - once revised, ask for approval again. Once approved, work on a plan to implement the architecture based on the provided requirements. If feedback is provided, revise the plan and ask for approval again. Once approved, implement all steps in that plan. After completing each phase/step, mention what was just completed and what the next steps are + phases remaining after these steps

It’s not a mode is it? This is just clickbait. It’s a prompt, hardly a “mode”. It’s not like this magic text enables some kind of hidden feature of Cursor is it. Just tell it for what it is. Example prompts to use for different use-cases.

I call it a mode because it’s literally how it works. Instead of using this as a prompt, I add this to my global rules for AI and call it a mode there. That way, when I’m talking - all I have to say is, “enter architecture mode” It makes working with prompts 10x easier since you don’t have to keep typing this out AND it is extremely reliable in mapping my intention to specific “workflow”/mode that I’ve defined in my global rules for AI. So no, these are not example prompts for different use cases. These are global rules for AI that trick Cursor into operating in a “mode” Give this pattern try if you’d like, I find that framing worklows in my global rules for AI as “modes” to be INCREDIBLY useful and powerful. For example, if I said - “when debugging do x, y, z” my debugger guidelines would often not take affect. BUT if I I say, “enter debugger mode” it works 100% of the time.

why it not working help me

Check out the troubleshooting section here first: If nothing there helps, capture some logs as you see in our docs and please open an issue ticket on the GitHub! I’m reviewing PRs and updating things this weekend. Happy to take a closer look at this as well if the problem persists!

Ted, I tried adding a Ux designer mode to the list.

Hey! I haven't implemented the ability to submit new prompts yet but I will soon! I want this to be a highly curated set of prompts. Kind of like wikipedia style where people can suggest changes, admins approve/reject with notes. And users can submit entirely new prompts. Anyone who submits a prompt or has suggestions approved, would get credit on the bottom of the prompt as well! Launching this collaboration feature within the next two weeks.. need to focus on some other work this weekend unfortunately :/

Thanks for sharing! I will add this rule. It’s so cool to see how you tackle a feature in cursor! Hey quick question, what speaking tool are you using? I’m asking because the one on my Mac sometimes works well, but sometimes it misses the mark.

Yeah the built in dictation is a little flaky at times! I’m using superwhisper. They have a free and paid version. They’re both great - paid version just gives you access to faster models and a few extra features. Also using karabiner-elements to replace my dictation key to work with superwhisper

Straight-up copied from RooCode

This prompt is 100% made by me. I only JUST heard of RooCode tonight since they tagged me in a post to give me credit for a prompt of mine that they just integrated. I take accusations like this seriously and while I know for a FACT that I typed up this prompt myself this week, I still took the time to examine their source code to verify your claims. Please reference the screenshot below for their prompt which looks NOTHING like mine. The notion of framing a prompt as a 'mode' is not a novel idea either... in fact, it's probably going to become a VERY common pattern in any system prompt for AI code editors as it makes it much more reliable when mapping intent to a specific part of a system prompt. To confirm that my prompt is not stolen form RooCode, please visit line 87 at src/shared/modes.ts in the roocode repository.
