We have to ask ourselves if this is how we want to live as a society—if we want 3,400 people to be prioritized over well more than 300 million. And when we question the legitimacy of that power structure, the people at the top are going to be very mad. And the little hobby newspapers that they’ve bought—which they love to say are making the quality of everything better. Jeff Bezos purchased the The Washington Post. He laid off some of the highly qualified journalists that made it an American institution so that he could turn it into a mouthpiece that launders his personal agenda and opinions. And he is using it because, for a lot of folks, it’s not enough to be powerful—they have to be loved. And he then uses this mouthpiece to take aim at politicians who want to question the deeply unequal and unjust distribution of power in America. They want to continue to undercut, threaten, and punish those who say: democracy belongs at the ballot box—economic power, political power—and that power should belong to the people of this country, not the very few.

To which I agree, when people look at allegations, the quick, easy generic argument to make is that there is a power dynamic, while also further diminishing any other argumentation. People in the past few years have made this argument frequently, that it has diminished the true meaning of what is actually a power dynamic.

But ethnic tensions are not the result of a white person waking up one day and thinking he needs to start despising people who are darker than he is. Neither is it the result of black people suddenly lurching into a policy of violence and mayhem. There are two errors to avoid when it comes to the kind of repentance that is needed in an hour like ours. One is to approach the whole thing in a simplistic spirit, calling for people to repent of all their behavior, but only starting at the precise moment the rioting started. But repentance is also needed for all the decisions and policies that led to the conditions that made the rioting seem like a reasonable way out. It isn’t, but why do people come to believe that? The second mistake is that of starting at the wrong end—this happens when we start by confessing the sins of the other guy. That gets us nowhere, and just perpetuates the conflict. You can confess other people’s sins all day long and your joy will not come back.
