Once complete, it will generate roughly 6,460 GWh a year and, together with the GERD and Gibe III, help turn Ethiopia into one of Africa’s biggest electricity producers and exporters.

The goal was to prove that nuclear weapons could be used for "civilian landscaping", creating reservoirs and canals instantly. They buried a 140-kiloton device (the equivalent of 10 "Little Boys") under a dry riverbed in Kazakhstan and vaporized 10 million cubic meters of earth in seconds. The blast created a perfect crater, 400 meters wide and 100 meters deep. Engineers then diverted the Chagan River to fill it, creating an artificial lake. To quell fears about radiation, Efim Slavsky, the Minister of Medium Machine Building (the man in charge of the entire Soviet nuclear program), arrived at the newly filled crater. In a display of supreme confidence (or madness), he was filmed taking a swim in the radioactive water. Slavsky defied the odds and lived to be 93, dying in 1991. The lake did not fare as well. Today, "Atomic Lake" is still highly radioactive. The water contains levels of tritium and cobalt-60 up to 100 times the permitted limit.
