Turkish PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk was detained by masked U.S. ICE agents yesterday while heading to an Iftar dinner in Massachusetts. Ozturk, who held a valid F-1 visa and studied at Tufts University, was reportedly being watched for two days before her arrest. She was on the phone with her mother when she was arrested. Her visa had been suddenly terminated—reasons still unclear. Ozturk had co-authored an op-ed urging Tufts to recognize the Palestinian genocide and divest from firms linked to Israel. She was also listed on Canary Mission, a site that blacklists pro-Palestine activists.

This is horrifying. You can hear the fear in her voice. Rumeysa Ozturk is in the U.S. on a valid student visa and was still grabbed off the street by a group of masked ICE agents in plain clothes. How is this a legal detention and not a kidnapping????

Watch this footage of masked ICE agents wearing street clothes stalking, surrounding, grabbing and abducting Tufts University PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk outside her home in broad daylight. Her crime? Apparently writing a editorial in her student newspaper criticizing the genocide in Gaza. We strongly condemn the Trump administration for turning U.S. immigration agents into thought police who are abducting students off of American city streets for the benefit of the Israeli government. Americans nationwide must recognize the dangerous precedent being set by the fascist thought police of this Israel First administration. The federal government is disappearing and then trying to deport students legally present here solely because of their peaceful political speech. This is un-American and unconstitutional. We are in communication with Rumeysa's immigration attorney. We demand her release and full transparency regarding her status. #RumeysaOzturk #FreeSpeech #FreePalestine
