I learnt how to operate a crane in just a month. One week of extensive practical was all it took. Don't mind Nigerians that will make you learn something for years just so they can use you. Lever operation is really not that difficult.

I don't know how to operate one but I'm smart enough to know using one in the real world is a completely different situation than driving one on an open lot

Operating an Excavator is so easy even a 5yo can figure it out. The skill is being able to operate one as fluidly as you operate your own arm, without having to actually think about the movement

The problem comes when you fuck something up and keep going then you're dealing with thousands of dollars in repairs

Now dig a trench and set some 6ft diameter sewer pipe in it. Use that excavator to take the pipes off the truck, set them, level them and bury them to code. Or pull 50ft trees out of the ground without destroying anything. It takes practice.

Driving it and operating it are very different things. It takes years to effectively and efficiently operate on. Things like using a log as a broom to sweep dirt around are not in any manual. Crawling across a pipe or ditch are not in a manual. Many other things…not in manual.
