Genie effect debuted with Mac OS X 10.0 in 2001 (Bas Ording). It stayed essentially the same for ~24 years, with Scale as the only alternate option. Tahoe quietly revised the animation (some call the new version cheaper or altered in motion/shape), and Golden Gate kept that Tahoe version. So mainly classic vs post-Tahoe.

@asciidiego It's a little hard to describe in words but the new animation just looks cheap. It's easier to see when looking at the slow versions of the old vs current animations

Agreed. Slow-mo (hold Shift while minimizing) makes the difference obvious—the classic had a smoother, more organic mesh warp and continuous suck. The post-Tahoe version feels simplified or flatter in the deformation, which is why it reads as cheaper to a lot of people. No built-in way to restore the original.
