tried not merging it but just clipped the brightness layer and made duplicated layer a hardlight . that way you can still change the color of the brightness layer.

@ursawantstokill Process is similar. You should make the first orange layer a "brightness" layer on top of the copy. You can change blending modes here, it should be on top of your layers. After that you blend the copy layer and the brightness layer; then make that merged layer "Hard Light."
