The performance of both John Payne and Evelyn Keyes is great throughout the movie, but in this scene it is as perfect as it could get. Phil Karlson is one of the most unique filmmakers of the period who made some of the gritty, brutal and realistic noirs. This movie is certainly among his best. Do watch this one if you haven't yet. I highly recommend his works. P.S: Remembering the great American filmmaker Phil Karlson on his 118th birthday!
