They thought someone had broken in. They ran down and found their cat, a grey tabby called Nora, alone on the bench, hammering at one key with her right paw. She looked up at them, then went back to it. The cat had taught herself. Nora’s owner Betsy gave piano lessons in that room every day. Over the months Nora had watched, and at some point decided she’d have a go. None of the other six cats in the house ever touched the piano. Only Nora. She had preferences. She’d only play one specific Yamaha. She gravitated to a particular range of notes in the middle of the keyboard. She refused to play if she couldn’t sit properly on the bench, and if a student annoyed her Betsy would shift the bench back a foot and Nora would simply quit for the day. A video of Nora went up on YouTube in 2007 and got 17 million views. The Times of London compared her playing to a mix of Philip Glass and free jazz. America’s National Science Foundation, the country’s main scientific research body, put her in a museum exhibit on animal behaviour. In 2009 a composer in Lithuania scored a full orchestral concerto around her recordings. It premiered live with a chamber orchestra in Lithuania, with Nora’s playing on a screen above them. They called it CATcerto. Most animals who do impressive things have been trained. Nora wasn’t. She picked it up by watching, which is observational learning, and it’s rare in cats. A man in #UttarPradesh's #Hathras was arrested after a 19-year-old woman died by suicide, allegedly following his refusal to marry her, police said on Wednesday. Kamini Sharma consumed poison on Monday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital by her family, where doctors declared her dead. On Tuesday, police recovered a video from the phone of Kamini's aunt in which the teenager could be heard blaming her neighbour and alleged lover, Akash, saying his refusal to marry her and his family's opposition to their relationship had pushed her to take the extreme step. In the video, Kamini is heard apologising to her mother, calling her "the best mother in the world". She said she did not want to die but felt compelled to do so as Akash and his family were unwilling to accept their relationship. Following the incident, an FIR was registered under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Akash was taken into custody, SP Hathras Chiranjeevi Sinha said. Police said Kamini and the accused had been in a relationship for around four years. "The investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the evidence," a senior police officer said.

A 40-year-old former software engineer allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife, who was a bank manager, near #MagadiRoad on Tuesday evening after receiving a divorce notice. Balamurugan, a former software engineer at a prominent firm in #Whitefield, reportedly suspected his wife of having an affair and strongly opposed her demands for a legal separation. Investigations reveal that Balamurugan had been searching for his family’s new location for months. After discovering their residence, he moved to the Cholurpalya area four months ago to monitor her movements. The situation escalated last week when he officially received a divorce notice from Bhuvaneshwari. On Tuesday evening, between 6.30 pm and 7 pm, Balamurugan waited for his wife as she walked home from her office. He intercepted her and fired a pistol, inflicting critical bullet injuries. Bhuvaneshwari was rushed to Shanbagh Hospital, but was declared dead upon arrival. Shortly after the shooting, the accused walked into the Magadi Road police station, confessed to the killing and surrendered himself to the authorities. In this video by Ron Walker, the Cairn Gorm hollow known as Ciste Mhearad (Margaret’s coffin) is completely filled with snow. This location has significant historical interest. In a visit of 1801, intrepid female explorer Sarah Murray wrote of it being known locally as ‘the snow house’: ‘those who mount that eminence (Cairngorm) should walk to the edge of the precipices hanging over the hollow towards Loch Auon (Avon) and to the snow house. The snow house is not far from the Cairn or heap of stones, on the highest part of Cairngorm, and is a hollow, in extent an acre or two. This hollow is filled with snow, and although it faces the south, it is never melted either by the sun or rain’ Snow has survived here on only two occasions since 2000, which is an indicator of colder and snowier times historically compared to today.
